Chiefs chop Amani Toomer

The Kansas City Chiefs, who signed veteran receiver Amani Toomer in the hopes that he would be able to help provide leadership and stability to a rebuilding team, have decided that they don’t need him, after all.

The Chiefs released Toomer as part of the moves aimed at taking the roster from 80 to 75.

Also released were veteran defensive tackle Alphonso Boone and rookie tackle Cameron Golberg.

Receiver Devard Darling, whom we’ve reported likely has a torn ACL, was placed on injured reserve. Running back Kolby Smith remains on the Physically Unable to Perform list, knocking him out for at least six weeks of the regular season.

Toomer had spent his entire career with the Giants. He caught 48 passes for 580 yards and four touchdowns last season, during which he appeared in every regular-season game and started 12 of them.

For his career, Toomer has 668 receptions for 9,497 yards and 54 touchdowns.
