The Indianapolis Colts have decided to go with Matt Stover instead of Adam Vinatieri as their kicker in the playoffs.
Stover took over the Colts’ kicking job after Adam Vinatieri had knee surgery in October, and he made nine of 11 field goal attempts. Vinatieri returned Week 16 against the Jets, but Vinatieri is still not 100 percent and the Colts have decided that Stover is the better option for the postseason.
Said Colts coach Jim Caldwell of Stover, “He’s done a great job for us. He has fit in extremely well in terms of handling his duties and responsibilities. He’s very mature. He’s done exceptionally well.”
Vinatieri will remain on the active roster, which means he could still return in the playoffs. But Caldwell seems to have made up his mind on Stover.
