Colts linebacker Daniel Adongo won’t be playing on Sunday, for reasons unrelated to health or ability.

According to Stephen Holder of the Indianapolis Star, the Colts have ruled Adongo out for Sunday’s game at Jacksonville in the midst of a criminal investigation.

Via Holder, police responding to Adongo’s residence this week, after a woman who lives there told a friend by text message that the woman needed help. The friend alerted police, who then went to the residence.

Adongo already had left for work. The woman said she did not need medical assistance, and she could not explain the reason for the text message. Police prepared a report and sent it to the local prosecutor for a review.

“The Indianapolis Colts are aware of media reports regarding a possible criminal investigation of Daniel Adongo,” the Colts said in a statement. “As is evident from the reports, the facts relating to the alleged incident are highly uncertain. We are investigating the matter and until we have gathered clear information, it would be unfair to all concerned for us to make any public comment.”

Based on the information contained in Holder’s story, it seems unlikely that charges would be pursued. If anything happened at the residence shared by Adongo and the woman who sent the text, the woman doesn’t seem to be inclined to do anything about it. Absent another witness or other evidence of wrongdoing, the authorities most likely will drop this one.

The next question becomes whether the Colts will drop Adongo. The former rugby star has bounced on and off the roster over the past two seasons, putting him squarely in the zone of interchangeable parts of which a football team is more likely to make an example than an excuse.
