Doug Marrone has a job again, but he was up for one better than that one or the one he quit.

According to Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports, Marrone actually interviewed for the 49ers head coaching job, before they gave it to defensive line coach Jim Tomsula.

Of course, Marrone is making more money to not coach the Bills ($4 million) than Tomsula will make to actually coach the 49ers this year ($3.5 million), and that’s probably not an insignificant factor in this transaction.

In hindsight, the 49ers seemed destined to go with the low-cost and low-maintenance Tomsula after the torture of putting up with Jim Harbaugh taking them to three NFC Championship Games and a Super Bowl in three years.

Marrone might have overplayed his hand in leaving the Bills, but he’s also fallen into an NFL job in a place with sunshine and no state income taxes.

And if Tomsula falls flat, he’ll have a foot in the door and familiarity with the bosses who might decide to go with more of a known commodity next time.
