Things have not gone well in Buffalo on the field this season and there’s been talk throughout the year about friction off the field as well.

The specific friction is reportedly between General Manager Doug Whaley and coach Rex Ryan and dates back to the preseason, although Ryan has publicly said that he has a good relationship with Whaley. Whaley said the same on WGR 550 on Tuesday while also saying that he doesn’t feel a need for clarification on his future from team ownership.

“Ownership has been great. My relationship with Rex Ryan is something that I cherish,” Whaley said. “I wake up every day happy to come in and work with him. My future, ownership doesn’t have to tell me anything. I’ve always attacked my job with the mindset of let me do my job not to lose it, but to keep it and keep getting better. So until the ownership tells me I’m here for the long haul and get this team where we need to go.”

There have been varying reports about Whaley’s job security over the course of the season. The most recent round place his departure in the unlikely category, which would leave plenty more mornings for Whaley to show up to work with Ryan on the sideline and a smile on his face.
