Texans cornerback Dunta Robinson is about to become a very rich man.
John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports that the Texans have informed Robinson that they won’t use the franchise tag on him for a second straight year.
(Florio notes that Robinson’s “Pay me, Rick” message didn’t work. Although that won’t stop me from trying the same maneuver.)
There will be “no more negotiations” between the two sides before March 5, which means that Robinson will almost certainly be playing for a new team next year.
The six-year veteran has endured some ups and downs in his career, but he’s clearly the best cornerback set to hit the open market. Now two years removed from ACL surgery, Robinson is accustomed to covering the opponent’s best receiver every week.
Texans G.M. Rick Smith won’t do it, but someone will (over)pay the man.
