The Texans signed Ed Reed for his veteran presence.

But he won’t be present with them on the field soon, as he just had hip surgery.

According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, Reed needed surgery to repair a “small labral tear in his hip,” but is expected to be back on the field for training camp.

If the prognosis is correct, it shouldn’t be a huge issue for the Texans, who can use the reps to get rookie safety D.J. Swearinger ready for the season.

But it might also explain why the Ravens didn’t seem eager to get into a bidding war for him, or bring him back at all.
