Alex Webster, who played running back for the Giants for 10 seasons and spent five more seasons as the team’s head coach, has died at the age of 80.
Webster’s death comes just three months after he was inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor.
“Alex was one of the all-time great Giants,” Giants owner John Mara said. “He contributed so much to our team as a player, assistant coach and head coach. He was an even better person. We shall miss him dearly.”
As a player, Webster ran for 4,638 and 39, and he also caught 240 passes for 2,679 yards and 17 touchdowns. He finished among the league’s Top 10 rushers four times. As a coach, Webster led the Giants to a surprising 9-5 record and was named Coach of the Year in 1970, but he never reached the postseason and resigned after a 2-11-1 record in 1973.
Known as a tough, physical runner, Webster scored two touchdowns in the Giants’ 1956 NFL Championship Game victory over the Bears.
