Sunday was another big day for Texans defensive end J.J. Watt.
Watt had three sacks, four tackles for losses and knocked down a pass during Houston’s 27-13 victory over the Jaguars. Put that alongside the overall body of work that Watt has provided the Texans this season and there’s more fuel for Watt’s MVP candidacy. It’s a long shot given the fact that no defensive player has claimed the award since 1986 and Watt doesn’t plan to do any off-field work to convince voters that they should break from historical trends.
“That’s for people like you to decide, not me,” Watt said to Peter King of MMQB.com. “I can’t change any voters’ minds, and I don’t think I should try. I don’t care, actually. It doesn’t matter to me. It’s an award. If people vote for me, great. But to politic for it, no. Please vote for me? No. People who play don’t get to decide who wins, nor should they. I want to be deserving, but not because I politicked for it. My play on the field is all that should matter. Nothing else.”
Watt’s play does all the talking that needs to be done about his MVP credentials. It probably won’t be enough to swing the vote unless Aaron Rodgers suddenly starts playing like Mr. Rogers, but that doesn’t make it any less impressive.
