With all the focus on NFL players possibly being fined for things they say on Twitter (and the specific places and times on which they do so), one previously overlooked item has been the possibility that teams could get in trouble for the content of their tweets, too.
During the Patriots-Jets game, New York linebacker Bart Scott was on the wrong end of a personal foul for kicking the head of Pats receiver Julian Edelman.
The only problem? Replays showed that Scott didn’t kick Edelman.
And the Jets pointed that out via the team’s official Twitter page.
Though it’s likely not enough to trigger a fine for criticizing the officiating (and we’re suddenly having flashbacks to last year’s convoluted debate over whether criticism of officials is appropriate as long as it’s not targeted at the integrity of the officials), there’s a line out there that teams shouldn’t cross. With the ability of someone sitting behind a computer screen to vent in real-time, this could get interesting.
So, in other words, we hope Colts G.M. Bill Polian becomes the person responsible for updating the team’s official Twitter page.
