During his retirement press conference on Wednesday, Osi Umenyiora said that a team offered him a contract on Tuesday but he passed because he didn’t want to continue playing unless it was with the Giants.
If Umenyiora’s preference was just to play his home games in MetLife Stadium, he may have opted to continue his playing career.
The Jets were the team that contacted Umenyiora although both Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports and Bob Glauber of Newsday report that the team didn’t make a formal offer to the veteran pass rusher. The call was to see if Umenyiora was set on bringing his career to an end or if he might have interest in playing outside linebacker in the team’s 3-4 scheme.
Umenyiora paid the Jets a visit earlier in the offseason, although General Manager Mike Maccagnan said at the time he was just visiting coach Todd Bowles on his way to the airport and that he wasn’t even aware of the visit until he was asked about it later in the day.
Calvin Pace and Lorenzo Mauldin have both missed time this week with injuries, which leaves the Jets thin at the position right now.
