Kubiak gets new three-year contract

Forget Media Day; Houston is the NFL center of breaking news this Tuesday afternoon.

Gary Kubiak signed a new three-year contract through 2012 with the Texans, according to the Houston Chronicle. Instead of an extension, Kubiak ripped up his old deal to get a contract that will end in the same year as his assistant coaches.

“I want to be on the same path as them,” Kubiak said. “I think that’s important. It shows we’re all in this together.”

Kubiak has gradually built one of the best passing attacks in the NFL. Owner Bob McNair chose continuity, wisely we believe, over blowing the team up after missing the playoffs again.

“I’m real excited about it,” Kubiak said. “Bob [McNair] has always been very good to me. I respect him a great deal. I’m glad he’s got the confidence in me to finish what we started when we came here. We’ve got a great opportunity to have something real special.”

The Texans clearly believe in Kubiak, but the reality is that he’s year-to-year, like so many other coaches. The Texans need to do something real special soon, like make the playoffs in 2010.
