The Lions have lost their top running back.

Ameer Abdullah has been placed on injured reserve with a foot injury suffered in Sunday’s loss to the Titans.

The IR designation means Abdullah will miss at least half the season. The league now allows teams to take one player off injured reserve and back on the 53-man roster eight weeks after he’s placed on injured reserve. It’s unknown yet whether the Lions plan to do that with Abdullah, or whether he’s done for the entire season.

Abdullah’s injury came at the end of a zigzagging run that showed off exactly what the Lions like about Abdullah, who has the shiftiness to make people miss in the open field.

With Abdullah out, the Lions will turn more to Theo Riddick, as well as rookie Dwayne Washington and second-year player Zach Zenner, who hasn’t played at all this season. The Lions may also bring back Joique Bell, who worked out in Detroit yesterday.
