Several weeks ago, Bills coach Doug Marrone was miffed that the front office decided to sign veteran quarterback Kyle Orton. Marrone believed that the move would undermine the potentially fragile confidence of starter EJ Manuel.
Now, Marrone feels differently.
Per a league source, the decision to bench Manuel in favor of Orton was Marrone’s call. Presumably, Marrone realizes that new owners Terry and Kim Pegula will clean house unless the team is so good that the fans wouldn’t tolerate change.
And so in a last-ditch effort to avoid change at the highest levels of the football operation, Marrone needed to change quarterbacks.
