In their 13-6 victory vs. Oakland on Sunday, the Chargers made a first-minute touchdown hold up for four quarters.
The punting of Mike Scifres was one of the reasons why.
After pinning the Raiders inside their 15-yard-line on five different occasions, Scifres has garnered AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors, the NFL announced Wednesday. It’s the second time Scifres has received the award from the league.
The Raiders did not score on any of the drives that began inside their 15. Their worst starting field position was their own two-yard-line, which came after Scifres lofted a 43-yard punt that dropped softly to the turf at around the three and dribbled out of bounds.
Scifres punted nine times against the Raiders, posting a 41.4-yard net average. Oakland managed just seven return yards on three run-backs.
The 34-year-old Scifres is perhaps best known for his wonderful punting performance in the Chargers’ 2008 wild-card win vs. the Colts, a game in which he pinned Indianapolis inside its 10 four different times.
