Whether it was because of penalties, a cross-country trip after a bye week or the play of the home team, the Seahawks found themselves in a closer game than they would have liked during Monday night’s visit to the Redskins.
They were up a touchdown with 2:33 left in the game when they faced a third-and-four near midfield. Quarterback Russell Wilson took the snap, immediately came under pressure from the Washington front seven and began scrambling to avoid a sack. It seemed that throwing the ball away might be his only option, but Wilson floated a pass that found running back Marshawn Lynch for a first down and much more to all but seal the victory for Seattle.
It was the capper of a night that saw Wilson make all kinds of plays with his arm and legs. Wilson finished the night 18-of-24 for 201 yards and two touchdowns and he added 122 more yards on the ground. Wilson, who also scored a rushing touchdown, was just the fifth player in history to run for at least 100 yards while throwing for at least 200 in the same game.
All of that was enough to make Wilson the NFC offensive player of the week for the third time in his career. With the Seahawks 3-1 and looking set for another run to the playoffs, Wilson may be adding to that total before the year is out.
