Last week, a report surfaced that the Rams could be re-signing guard Richie Incognito, a volatile lineman whom the team cut during the 2009 season after yet another on-field, in-game meltdown. The report apparently came from Incognito, who claims he was told there might be some interest in bringing him back.
After he was cut, the Bills claimed the balance of the blocker’s contract, and he now is a restricted free agent. He received no tender from Buffalo.
G.M. Billy Devaney disputes the notion that Incognito could return.
“That’s totally bizarre,” Devaney told Howard Balzer of the St. Louis Globe-Democrat.
“There is 90 to 95 percent of Richie that is outstanding. It’s the other 5 or 10 when the dark Richie kicks in and it becomes a problem. He was here to pick up some clothes or equipment. He was here about a month ago. We told him the door is always open any time he wants to stop by and say hello. But trust me, that’s all it is; just dropping by to say hello.
“Richie feels the same way. He knows with everything that’s gone on here, it’s best for him to be someplace else. So, no. It’s never even been brought up about re-signing Richie.”
The fact that Incognito would even be interested in returning comes as a surprise, given that he said after being cut that he was happy to be out of the situation in St. Louis.
Then again, in a 32-branch company, if the other 31 aren’t interested, the situation in St. Louis suddenly looks not quite as bad as he thought it was.
