The Giants were believed to be interested in signing safety Devin McCourty before he decided to remain with the Patriots and now they’re reportedly setting their sights on making running back Shane Vereen a former teammate of McCourty’s.
Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News reports that the Giants have “very serious” interest in signing Vereen and that they’ll be trying to strike a deal with him soon after free agency gets underway on Tuesday afternoon.
Vereen ran for 391 yards last year, but the fact that he caught 52 passes for 447 yards and three touchdowns is likely what’s caught the Giants’ attention. Vereen would slot into their offense well as a pass-catching complement to Rashad Jennings and Andre Williams out of the backfield.
It’s not the first we’ve heard of interest in that kind of addition to the offense as the Giants have also been linked with Roy Helu and Antone Smith in recent days. Vacchiano’s colleague Manish Mehta has also linked Vereen to the Jets in the event they lose Bilal Powell, which may lead to a bidding war in the swamps of Jersey a bit later on Tuesday.
