Bills coach Rex Ryan spent some time talking about his brother Rob during a radio interview on Friday morning and said that he took criticism of bringing him on the Bills staff personally.
Ryan held a press conference later in the day and his brother remained a big topic of conversation. The role that Rob will play on the coaching staff was more of the thrust this time. With Rob on board as an assistant head coach focused on the defensive side of the ball, there’s been talk that defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman would be spending most of his time with the secondary during the 2016 season.
Rex was asked if Thurman would maintain his title with his brother on the staff.
“Absolutely,” Ryan said, via WGR.com. “And I understand where it’s coming from, because my brother, twelve years he’s been a coordinator. But we brought my brother in just to add to what we have, and to have other eyes in it.”
Ryan explained the addition as one that he feels will help him be “more involved in the team” as a whole and said he didn’t fear having too many cooks in the kitchen on the defensive side of the ball. Ryan also confirmed that he will remain the one drawing up the menu each week when asked if he’d continue to call plays on defense next season.
