Rex Ryan talks Plaxico, without specifically talking Plaxico

With the Jets facing the potential departure of receivers Braylon Edwards and Santonio Holmes via free agency, they’re keeping an eye on potential replacements. Linked for weeks to Randy Moss, the Jets are now being suggested as a potential landing place for Plaxico Burress.

On Thursday, coach Rex Ryan addressed the possibility.

“What [G.M. Mike Tannenbaum] and I have always talked about is how we want to sign . . . as many of our own players as we can,” Ryan said at a book signing at the Jets Shop in Manhattan, per Ian Begley of ESPNNewYork.com. “We’ll address [free agency] once we have a better idea of what the rules are.”

Ryan didn’t address Burress by name, but since Burress currently isn’t the property of any other team, doing so wouldn’t have amounted to tampering.

As Begley points out, Ryan also may have been sending a message to Burress (and possibly Moss) by pointing out that the Jets “demand a lot” from their players.

“We want everything you’ve got so don’t come play for the Jets if you’re not willing to do that,” Ryan said.

It’s a commitment plenty of players will be willing to make, given that so many have said publicly and privately that they want to play for the Jets.
