Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman hurt his left elbow in the NFC Championship game, but didn’t miss any practice leading up to the Super Bowl nor did he miss any of the Super Bowl itself.
It does look like he’ll require some time off as a result of the injury, though. John Clayton of ESPN reports that Sherman played in the game with torn ligaments in his elbow and that he may need to have surgery to repair the injury this offseason.
Clayton reports that Sherman is likely to have Tommy John surgery, an operation named after and frequently prescribed for baseball pitchers. In the operation, a tendon from elsewhere in the body is used to replace the damaged ulnar collateral ligament in the elbow. Recovery time for pitchers can be more than a year, although they’re called on to use their elbows in a very different fashion than NFL cornerbacks.
Sherman said after the game that no one is 100 percent at this time in the season and that “there’s no excuse” associating the injury with the team’s loss.
