Saints sign Nate Stupar

Linebacker James Laurinaitis has agreed to a deal with the New Orleans Saints. Mike Florio believes veteran presence will be fantastic for a young Saints defense that needs leadership.

The Saints are bringing James Laurinaitis into the fold as they try to improve their defense in 2016, but he wasn’t Wednesday’s only addition at linebacker.

The Saints announced that they have signed Nate Stupar as a free agent in a release that also made quarterback Luke McCown’s return to the team official. He joins Laurinaitis and tight end Coby Fleener as additions from outside the organization in free agency.

Stupar entered the league as a seventh-round pick of the Raiders in 2012, but never played a regular season game for Oakland. He split the 2013 season between the 49ers and Jaguars and spent the last two seasons with the Falcons. Stupar played in every game last season, starting three times, and had 40 tackles and a sack.

Most of Stupar’s snaps with Atlanta came on special teams and that figures to be a big part of his portfolio in New Orleans as well.
