It’s time once again to break out the unwritten rulebook.
The Saints have released defensive end Greg Romeus under the “waived/injured” designation. Romeus, a seventh-round pick in 2011, tore an ACL and an MCL in his left knee during offseason workouts.
Romeus slid to round seven in large part because he wasn’t able to play last season while rehabbing a right knee injury suffered during his senior season at Pitt.
And so, in order to remove him from the 90-man roster now and stash him on injured reserve, the Saints had to expose him to waivers. And the possibility that some other team that thinks Romeus has a high degree of potential (if/when he can get and stay healthy) will claim him.
(The Patriots need pass rushers, right?)
The Saints filled the Romeus roster spot with linebacker Donavan Robinson, an undrafted free agent who spent the offseason program with the Jets.
