Rex Ryan is gone, but the brash proclamations from the Jets continue.

Jets defensive end Sheldon Richardson said today at the start of the team’s offseason conditioning program that he sees no reason the Jets can’t be the NFL’s best team this season.

“We strongly feel like we’re going to be the top defense in the league—and top team in the league, not just defense,” Richardson said, via Dom Cosentino of NJ.com.

Richardson said this year’s Jets are a much different team from last year’s 4-12 club.

“Offensively and defensively, we made moves that I feel like that progressed this team forward, and I feel like Jet Nation feels the same way,” he said. “This is going to be a great season. I strongly feel like this is going to be a great season for us.”

One thing never changes with the Jets: In April, they’re optimistic.
