Heinz Field currently holds 65,050 fans for Steelers games. The number soon could be heading toward 70,000.
The team announced today that it is considering the addition of 2,500 to 4,000 seats. The expansion would occur in what currently is the South Plaza.
Temporary seats have been placed there for Saturday’s Winter Classic, an open-air hockey game between the Capitals and Penguins, which will be televised by NBC.
The Steelers advised the Stadium Authority of the plans today, given that the additional seats would impact parking arrangements. For now, the Steelers are conducting a feasibility study regarding the possible expansion, and no final decision has been made.
