New Toronto Mayor Rob Ford says he sees the NFL in his city’s future.
Canada’s CBC News reports that Ford and his brother, Toronto City Council member Doug Ford, are keen on getting an NFL franchise north of the border -- and not just once a season, as the Buffalo Bills currently play.
“How can we bring tourism to Toronto? How can we create jobs? Great fit would be an NFL team,” Ford told CBC News.
A major sticking point would be a stadium: Ford acknowledged that the Rogers Centre, where the Bills play one regular-season game a year, wouldn’t suit an NFL team for eight regular-season games a year. And he said the taxpayers wouldn’t build the NFL a new stadium.
And yet the city thinks its sheer size (Toronto’s population is 2.5 million) can attract the NFL.
“The NFL cannot ignore the fourth-largest market in North America,” Doug Ford said.
Try telling that to Los Angeles.
