Minnesota Vikings starting cornerback Cedric Griffin may have a long off-season ahead of him, as the team is concerned that he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament on the overtime kickoff.
Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports that Griffin is expected to get an MRI soon, but the Vikings fear he has a torn ACL and possibly a torn MCL.
Griffin suffered the injury on the overtime kickoff, a play that proved costly for the Vikings when Saints return man Pierre Thomas picked up 40 yards. With Griffin out for overtime, the Vikings had to turn to rookie Asher Allen, who was flagged for defensive holding on the drive that set up the Saints’ game-winning field goal.
Griffin started all 16 games for the Vikings during the regular season. If he does have a torn ACL, he may not be back at full speed by the start of the 2010 season.
