Warner passed on Favre treatment

So we’re back from Media Day.

Videos and way too many quotes from the afternoon are on the way, but first we’re going to do some housecleaning with an item that slipped under the radar Monday.

In an interview with Michael Silver of Yahoo! Sports, Kurt Warner revealed that Ken Whisenhunt offered some perks in an effort to get him to return.

“Basically, Coach Whisenhunt told me that if there’s anything you need to make this work, let me know,” Warner said. “He said, ‘I’m willing to adjust anything within reason to have you stay. If you need to take some time off, the whole offseason off, some of training camp, we’ll figure it out.’ A lot of times he would say it in passing, just sort of having some fun with me, but there was some truth in it.”

Whisenhunt began to mention possibly relaxing the rules for Warner, ala Brett Favre, as early as last summer.

“I don’t think I could’ve lowered the standard I’d set,” Warner said. “And if I’d pulled back and we weren’t successful, it would’ve killed me.”

There’s an opportunity for a snide comment here about Whisenhunt fearing the Matt Leinart era, but it’s not necessary. We don’t blame the coach one bit for doing everything possible to keep Warner around another year.
