Wes Welker isn’t sure he’ll go to offseason program

Wes Welker said Tuesday that there’s been no progress on a long-term contract with the Patriots, which leaves him unsure of whether or not he’ll be with the Patriots when the offseason training program opens up on April 16th.

If Welker hasn’t signed a new deal by then, he would have to sign his franchise tender in order to take part in the team’s program. Welker told the Boston Herald that he isn’t ready to do that at this point.

“I don’t know. I’m not quite sure yet,” Welker said. “We’ll have to wait and see how things go. To tell you the truth, I haven’t made up my mind yet.”

The workouts are voluntary, so there’s no holdout drama tied to Welker’s decision. It doesn’t sound like there’s too much chance of that kind of drama developing, either, since Welker said again Tuesday that he has no qualms with the $9.515 million salary that comes with the tender. He’d just prefer a long-term deal and doesn’t seem to believe signing the tender right now is the best path toward getting one.
