The 49ers will have safety Malik Mustapha available for the first time this season on Sunday.

Mustapha was activated from the physically unable to perform list on Saturday. Mustapha was on the PUP list while recovering from a knee injury.

The 2024 fourth-round pick had 72 tackles, two tackles for loss, an interception, and five passes defensed during his rookie season.

The 49ers waived defensive lineman Robert Beal to create a spot on the 53-man roster for Mustapha. They also announced that they have elevated defensive lineman Trevis Gipson from the practice squad for their game against the Buccaneers.

The 49ers won’t have Brock Purdy again this week.

The team ruled out their starting quarterback after he didn’t practice all week with a toe injury. He has played only Weeks 1 and 4.

Mac Jones is expected to start for Purdy again, but the 49ers list Jones as questionable with his knee and oblique injuries. He was limited in all three practices.

Wide receiver Ricky Pearsall (knee) won’t play again, but wide receiver Jauan Jennings (ankle/rib) is questionable after a second consecutive limited practice.

Jennings played the first two games, missed Week 3 with ankle and shoulder injuries, played Week 4 and missed last Thursday’s game with his ankle and rib injuries.

The 49ers also ruled out defensive tackle Kevin Givens (pectoral), defensive end Yetus Gross-Matos (knee/hamstring) and wide receiver Jordan Watkins (calf).

Defensive tackle Alfred Collins (knee), defensive lineman Kalia Davis (hand), cornerback Upton Stout (ankle) and safety Malik Mustapha (knee) are questionable.

Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin missed the first three games of the season as he worked his way back from an ankle fracture and it looks like he’s set to miss another game this week.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports that Godwin is not expected to play against the 49ers on Sunday. Godwin has missed both days of practice this week with a fibula injury.

Godwin had six catches for 52 yards over the last two weeks.

The Bucs are also set to be without Mike Evans again this weekend, so it is setting up for another chance for first-round pick Emeka Egbuka to show off his skills as a target for quarterback Baker Mayfield.

49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings (ankle/rib) returned to a limited practice. He missed Wednesday’s work.

Jennings played the first two games, missed Week 3 with ankle and shoulder injuries, played Week 4 and missed last Thursday’s game with his ankle and rib injuries.

“I think it’s close to the same thing as last week,” coach Kyle Shanahan said Thursday on KNBR, via David Bonilla of 49erswebzone.com. “You know, having more time to do this [after a Thursday night game last week], he definitely has a better chance. He was able to do a few things today, but I think that one will come down to the wire.”

Quarterback Brock Purdy (toe) remained out of practice, making it even more likely that Mac Jones starts again Sunday. Jones (knee/oblique) remained limited on Thursday.

“Yeah, he wasn’t able [to throw] today,” Shanahan said of Jones, “so he just focused on handoffs and stuff like that. So, really trying to rest it up. Should be good to go on Sunday, but definitely wasn’t good enough to go today. So hopefully, that’ll continue to improve.”

Defensive tackle Alfred Collins (knee) returned to practice with limited participation, and running back Christian McCaffrey (rest) and left tackle Trent Williams (rest) had full participation after load management days on Wednesday.

The rest of the team’s report was the same as on Wednesday.

Wide receivers Ricky Pearsall (knee), Jordan Watkins (calf), defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos (knee, hamstring) and defensive end Robert Beal (ankle) were non-participants again.

Defensive tackle C.J. West (thumb), cornerback Upton Stout (ankle), defensive lineman Kevin Givens (pec), and defensive lineman Kalia Davis (hand) had a second consecutive day of limited work.

49ers quarterback Brock Purdy remained out of practice Wednesday and the likelihood that he’ll miss his fourth game of the season makes it vital that Mac Jones is ready to go for Sunday’s game against the Bucs.

Jones got knocked around a lot in last Thursday’s win over the Rams and he was listed as a limited participant in Wednesday’s practice. Jones has been dealing with a knee injury for the last few weeks and he was listed with an oblique issue as well this week, but General Manager John Lynch said there isn’t internal concern about his readiness for Week 6.

“No, I think we feel pretty good about where he’s going to be,” Lynch said on KNBR, via Matt Barrows of TheAthletic.com.

The 49ers have won all three of Jones’ starts while patching together a lineup that’s been riddled with other injuries. It looks like they’re on track to try for more of the same in Tampa this weekend.
