Budapest is the fifth city to announce a 2024 Olympic bid.

The Hungarian capital’s mayor and the Hungary Olympic Committee president declared the bid’s intention in a letter to International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach dated Tuesday.

Hungary has never hosted an Olympics. The four previously announced bid cities come from nations that hosted multiple Olympics -- Boston, Hamburg, Paris and Rome.

“We also welcome that the IOC is orienting itself to a more economical and sustainable organisation of the Olympic Games, by that breaking the monopoly of the largest and wealthiest countries to organise the Olympics,” the Budapest 2024 letter read. “Even cities smaller than Budapest, like Antwerp, Stockholm and Helsinki have been given the chance.”

A sixth bidder before the Sept. 15 deadline to announce a bid could be Baku, Azerbaijan, which recently hosted the first European Games.

IOC members will vote on the 2024 Olympic host city in 2017.
