Etiene Medeiros, Brazil’s most decorated female swimmer, failed a May 8 drug test for a banned substance found in asthma medication, according to Brazilian media.

Medeiros, 25, is the world-record holder in the non-Olympic, short-course 50m backstroke event. She was in line to compete in her first Olympics in Rio, but that is now very much in question.

Medeiros reached the 2015 World Championships semifinals in the 50m freestyle and 100m backstroke, while earning a silver medal in the non-Olympic 50m backstroke event.

A Brazilian woman has never earned an Olympic swimming medal.
