Tokyo 2020: No Opening Ceremony plans yet, despite meteor-shower reports

Tokyo 2020 Olympic Stadium

An internet buzz last week hyped a man-made meteor shower potentially igniting the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Opening Ceremony, but, given the Games are five years away, it is of course premature speculation.

“Tokyo 2020 will become an unforgettable Games for athletes and spectators, and we want the Opening Ceremony to showcase innovation and capture the world’s imagination,” Hikariko Ono, Tokyo 2020 spokesperson, said in a statement. “However, the planning for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Opening Ceremony will begin only after the Rio 2016 Games. Currently, the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee is focusing on preparations for the eight-minute show of the Handover Ceremony in Rio.”

Ono was referring to the portion of the Rio Olympic Closing Ceremony on Aug. 21 that will include a presentation from Tokyo 2020.
