STAMFORD, Conn. – July 5, 2023 – Reigning Olympic and world 400m hurdles champion Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, two-time 200m world champion Noah Lyles, reigning 100m world champion Fred Kerley, and reigning Olympic and world 800m champion Athing Mu headline NBC Sports’ three days of live coverage of the 2023 Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships beginning this Friday, July 7, at 10 p.m. ET on CNBC and Peacock from Hayward Field at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore.
The top three finishers in each event will qualify for the U.S. team that will compete at this summer’s 2023 World Championships in Budapest from August 19-27. The defending world champions in each event have earned a bye to this year’s World Championships. NBC Sports will provide extensive coverage of the 2023 World Championships across NBC platforms, with coverage details to be announced at a later date.
Lyles, who has a bye in the 200m after his world-beating performance at last year’s World Championships, is expected to compete in the 100m, where he will face an elite field featuring the reigning world silver and bronze medalists, Marvin Bracy-Williams and Trayvon Bromell, as well as 2019 100m world champion Christian Coleman. Reigning 100m world champion Fred Kerley, who has a bye into the World Championships in the 100m, is entered in the 200m.
McLaughlin-Levrone, who set the world record in the 400m hurdles en route to winning her first individual world title, is expected to race the 400m. The Tokyo Olympic 400m hurdles champion, who lowered her 400m personal best to 49.51 at the USATF NYC Grand Prix in June, has been focusing on the 400m this season and could threaten Sanya Richards-Ross’ American record of 48.70. Mu, who opened up her 2023 season with a dominant 800m win at the USATF NYC Grand Prix in June, has a bye to the World Championships in the 800m and is expected to compete in the 1500m this week.
Other notable athletes expected to compete include reigning Olympic and world shot put champion Ryan Crouser, two-time shot put world champion Joe Kovacs, two-time Olympic medalist Gabby Thomas, two-time 110m hurdles world champion Grant Holloway, Tokyo Olympic discus champion Valarie Allman, 2022 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay world champion Abby Steiner, 2022 200m world bronze medalist Erriyon Knighton, two-time Olympic champion Dalilah Muhammad, two-time 110m hurdles Olympian Devon Allen, 10,000m American record holder Grant Fisher, and more.
This meet also provides a platform for rising stars to showcase their talents on a major stage. Yared Nuguse, who ran the fastest 1500m time by a man representing the United States at the Oslo Diamond League meet in June, 20-year-old distance phenom Hobbs Kessler, and 2019 NCAA outdoor champion Sha’Carri Richardson, who is the seventh fastest woman of all time over 100m, all look to earn their first trip to the World Championships.
NBC Sports’ Leigh Diffey and Paul Swangard will call the event, joined by analysts four-time Olympic medalist Ato Boldon, four-time Olympic gold medalist Sanya Richards-Ross, two-time Olympian Kara Goucher, and 2012 London Olympic decathlon silver medalist Trey Hardee.
