Sunderland is in quite a hole, sitting 19th on the Premier League table with six points through 12 matches.

With just one win on the season, Sam Allardyce knows his side needs to start getting results to stay above the drop.

However, one of the biggest problems for Sunderland is purely a lack of talent. Dick Advocaat was vocal about the quality of the side and the board’s unwillingness to spend money to bring in the necessary players, a factor leading to his resignation in October.

Now with Allardyce in charge, Big Sam is hoping he gets the financial backing in the January transfer window to make some moves to try and keep Sunderland up.

You can be the best manager in the world but if the players are no good you are not going to get the results you need.

The hardest part of the job today, no question about it, is finding the players who are good enough at this level.

Going forward, our selection in that area will have to be very, very good indeed. We are not going to be able to make any mistakes if we bring anybody in, starting in January.

The board has no choice but to give Allardyce the proper funds to spend in the transfer window, or Sunderland will surely be relegated. The bigger decision that must be made is where to spend that money, as there are holes in every position in the lineup.
