Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko is discussing a new contract with the club as his current deal is set to expire at the end of next season.
The Bosnian striker confirmed the news ahead of his club’s International Champions Cup match against Liverpool.
“I can only say that I’m very happy at City and at the moment we are talking about a contract,” Dzeko said Wednesday. “We will see what happens but the main thing is I’m happy at City.”
Dzeko’s joy with City is a pleasant turn of events after the striker spent his first year and a half at the club unsettled playing in a super-sub role under then-manager Roberto Mancini. With Mancini’s departure and Manuel Pellegrini’s arrival last summer, however, Dzeko flourished scoring 26 goals to help his side to Premier League and Capital One Cup titles.
Dzeko began last season battling Alvaro Negredo for the right to start up top alongside Sergio Aguero. Injuries and a fall out of form condemned Negredo to the bench, giving Dzeko the confidence to inspire his side down the stretch when he scored four goals in the final three matches.
With Aguero on the mend and Negredo out for the start of the season with a broken foot, it will be up to Dzeko and, potentially the seldom-used Stevan Jovetic, to ensure City a solid start.
