Report: Beckham looking to add LeBron to Miami expansion team

James

According to Richard Johnson of the New York Post, David Beckham is hoping to add NBA superstar LeBron James as an investor in his Miami soccer venture.

Back in January, the Miami Heat star told reporters he was excited about Major League Soccer coming to Miami.

“I think Miami is a great place for soccer,” James said over two months ago. “There’s so many great athletes that come from South Florida, Florida in general, and you know, the lower coast. Hopefully we can make it really good.”

Apparently Beckham was listening, because according to Johnson’s source, the two have had “several secret meetings” to discuss the expansion team.

The source likened James to what Jay Z did for the Brooklyn Nets, saying he doesn’t need LeBron’s money, but could make great use of his draw and popularity.

The comparison makes sense; only when the rap superstar sold his shares to start his sports agency Roc Nation did fans find out he only owned 0.066% of the team.

Getting LeBron on board would certainly be an enormous boost to the new Miami franchise. His pull is astronomical, and he would bring an appeal to a different fan base than Beckham.

Last month, Beckham mentioned the basketball icon was a “friend” telling reporters “we speak as friends about what we’re doing, but we’re also speaking as great businessmen.”
