Phoenix Mercury vs Las Vegas Aces Game Preview:

After making a WNBA finals run last year, no one would have predicted that the Mercury would be 8-15 through the first half of the season.

“We’re playing for our playoff lives here to finish the season,” said Phoenix head coach Nate Tibbetts after the team’s 92-89 loss to the Indiana Fever on Thursday night — their second straight loss.

Kahleah Copper and Alyssa Thomas both scored 22 points to lead the team.

The Mercury led by 10 in the third quarter, but the Fever went on a 13-0 run to take the lead, setting up a tight contest in the fourth quarter. A layup from Indiana guard Kelsey Mitchell in the closing seconds sealed the Mercury’s defeat.

Despite the loss, the Mercury are focused on climbing back into playoff contention, taking it one game at a time.

“Of course I have. I’ve thought about it. Not getting too deep, we’re trying to dig our way out,” said Copper when asked about the team’s current outlook.

The Aces (16-6) are coming off an 88-80 victory against the Portland Fire on Thursday night. A’ja Wilson, in her first game back since missing three straight with an ankle injury, had 32 points and 10 rebounds. Jackie Young also finished with a double-double, adding 19 points and 11 assists.
