Everybody, including the ACC, seems to be abandoning Charlotte in the wake of a controversial state law. One state school, though, is embracing the city.
In a press release, Wake Forest announced that its 2020 game against Notre Dame will be played in Charlotte. Specifically, the game will be played at Bank of America Stadium, the home of the NFL’s Carolina Panthers.
There’s no word on the financial compensation Wake will receive for the loss of a home game.
“We have a lot of alumni in the Charlotte area and we brought 20,000 people with us when we played in the bowl game in 2007,” said WF athletic director Ron Wellman in a statement. “We will still have six games in our home stadium in 2020 and this is a great opportunity for us to play in an NFL stadium. Notre Dame has a strong following and when you look at both teams, this could be a very good game.”
“We are thrilled for the opportunity to be part of this game,” said the executive director of the Charlotte Sports Foundation, Will Webb. “This is a tremendous matchup and we are looking forward to welcoming two great fan bases in the city of Charlotte.”
The two teams have met three times previously, the first coming in 2011 and the last in 2015. The Irish won all three games.
Two additional games prior to the 2020 contest have already been scheduled: in South Bend Nov. 4, 2017, and at BB&T Field in Winston-Salem on Nov. 17, 2018.
