49ers signed TE Erik Swoope to a one-year contract.
A big day for Swoope truthers everywhere. Waived by the Raiders in July, Swoope will be buried on the Niners’ depth chart if Jordan Reed can play this season.

  • FA Tight End #86
    Raiders waived TE Erik Swoope.
Swoope made some noise with 15 catches for 297 yards and a touchdown with the Colts back in 2016, but knee injuries have plagued him since then. Getting cut at this point by the TE-needy Raiders is not a great sign for his future. DT Ethan Westbrooks was signed in a corresponding move.
  • FA Tight End #86
Raiders signed TE Erik Swoope, formerly of the Colts, to a one-year contract.
This is a really interesting addition to a tight-end group that is lacking any sort of big talent. In addition to Swoope, the Raiders employ blockers Derek Carrier and Luke Willson, fourth-round rookie Foster Moreau, and former-wide receiver Darren Waller, who has actually been getting some spring hype. When Waller is getting hype, you know the position has nothing. Swoope was a project for years in Indianapolis before finally showing flashes the last two years, catching 23 balls for 384 yards (16.7 YPR) and four touchdowns on very limited playing time. It would not be a surprise if Swoope took control of the position, and it would be equally unsurprising if Swoope didn’t make the 53-man roster. He’s at least a name to watch in camp.
  • FA Tight End #86
    Colts waived/injured TE Erik Swoope.
He’ll revert to IR after failing his physical with the Saints. The injury-prone Swoope is a free agent this offseason.
  • FA Tight End #86
    Saints waived TE Erik Swoope.
Swoope lasted only 24 hours in New Orleans. If the big-play threat goes unclaimed this time, he figures to be a regular on the workout circuit.
  • FA Tight End #86
Saints claimed TE Erik Swoope off waivers from the Colts.
The Saints are a good landing spot for Swoope, though it’s going to be hard for him to get acclimated fast enough to make much of an impact. Swoope has been dealing with knee issues all year, but he’s flashed when healthy.
  • FA Tight End #86
    Colts waived TE Erik Swoope.
It’s the second time this season the ex-basketball player has been waived. Swoope can make some splash plays but not much else. His release is a sign that Mo Alie-Cox (calf) is trending in the right direction.
  • FA Tight End #86
Colts TE Erik Swoope (knee) is questionable for Week 13 against the Jaguars.
Swoope has been sidelined since Week 7 with a knee injury, but he was able to get in two limited practices this week. With Jack Doyle on injured reserve and Mo Alie-Cox sidelined by a calf injury, Swoope should see snaps if he is able to play.
  • FA Tight End #86
Colts declared TE Erik Swoope, TE Mo Alie-Cox, TE Ryan Hewitt G/T Denzelle Good, C Ryan Kelly, DT Hassan Ridgeway and RB Jonathan Williams inactive for Week 12 against the Dolphins.
Swoope remains week to week with a knee injury.
  • FA Tight End #86
Colts declared TE Erik Swoope, G/T Denzelle good, CB Nate Hairston, TE Ryan Hewitt, S Malik Hooker, CB D.J. Killings and DT Hassan Ridgeway inactive for Week 11 against the Titans.
Swoope remains week to week, as does Hooker.
