Gage Jump allowed only one hit over seven innings in the Athletics’ 5-0 shutout of the Angels on Thursday.

Jump was getting a battle at the end of his outing, throwing eight pitches to Denzer Guzman with two outs in the seventh. However, the last of those saw Vaughn Grissom wander too far off first on a ball in the dirt and get picked off by Shea Langeliers. Jump threw 107 pitches, an unusually high total for a rookie hurler in the year 2026, but he was in control from start to finish, striking out a new high of seven batters in his fifth major league start. He’s allowed a total of four runs in his four starts this month, with three of those coming in Las Vegas last week. He should be just fine to use in San Francisco next week.
Mets' ace Scott is finding his groove again
James Schiano discusses Mets' pitcher Christian Scott's strong stretch over his last six starts and why the Mets right-hander could emerge as a top-50 starting pitcher for the rest of the season.

The A’s will set their rotation to start the second half as Jump on Friday, J.T. Ginn on Saturday, and Jacob Lopez on Sunday in their three-game set against the Nationals. Jump, 3-4 with a 3.51 ERA, struggled a bit towards the beginning of July but bounced back against the White Sox. He’s definitely a viable mixed-league starter when he’s not pitching at home.

It was a nice rebound outing for Jump, but with the A’s getting shut out, he dropped his third start in a row anyway. While Jump was roughed up in his previous two outings, this makes five times in nine major league starts that he has allowed one or no runs. He’ll take a 3-4 record and a 3.51 ERA into the All-Star break. It’s likely that he’ll face the Nationals next weekend.

Jump was bad from, well, the jump; allowing a homer in the first and two more runs in the second. He gave up three more in the third, and to say he didn’t match the effort of Eury Pérez — who threw seven perfect innings — is quite the understatement. Jump has struggled in his last two outings while allowing 11 runs, and will try and rebound from those disappointing efforts against the White Sox in Chicago this weekend.

This was still kind of impressive from Jump. One of baseball’s best offenses certainly got the better of the 23-year-old, but while free passes could have turned this into a true massacre, he didn’t walk anyone and struck out five. Jump is still 3-2 with a 2.93 ERA and a 40/10 K/BB over 40 innings through seven big-league starts. As tough as the situation is in Sacramento, he’s not a lock to remain useful in mixed leagues over the rest of the season. However, he seems well on his way to becoming an excellent major league starting pitcher. He’ll get the Marlins on Sunday.

It might seem like the A’s have a quality offense this year, but it’s largely a product of their Triple-A ballpark; they came into tonight hitting .266/.351/.462 with 216 runs scored at home and .229/304/.367 with 149 runs scored on the road. Jump would appear to be legit with his 96-mph fastball and plus slider, but with no support in San Francisco tonight, he remained 3-1 with a 2.04 ERA through six starts. He’ll pitch at home against the Dodgers next week. making him a weak play in shallow leagues.

Jump got through five scoreless before allowing two singles and a walk to open the sixth. Justin Sterner came in and wound up surrendering a sac fly and a three-run homer to put the A’s down 4-2 and raise Jump’s ERA from 1.93 to 3.05. Even though he was pitching on the moon tonight, Jump still hasn’t allowed a homer in 23 1/3 innings as a major leaguer. He’ll face the Pirates in Sacramento next week.
  • ATH Starting Pitcher
Jump struck out three and issued three walks in the outing, dropping his ERA to 2.45 through three starts in the big leagues. He’s now pitched into the seventh in back-to-back appearances, both of which came on the road. The 23-year-old rookie southpaw next lines up to face the Rockies at home. It kicks off a 13-game homestand in hitter-friendly Sacramento.

Jump, who gave up four runs in five innings against the Mariners in his first MLB start, allowed just three hits with his average fastball up to 96.9 mph tonight. It was 95.9 mph in his first start and 95.8 mph in Triple-A this season. In spite of that, he still only generated five whiffs on 45 swings. Jump still seems like a tough play in mixed leagues at the moment. He’ll face the Astros on the road on Sunday.

Jump struck out two in a scoreless first inning, then ran into trouble in the second. The Mariners brought three runs across in the frame on four hits and a walk. He stranded two more runners in the third, then allowed another run in on four hits in the fourth. Gage gave the A’s one more scoreless frame, ending his day after five. On the bright side, he only walked one and generated 13 whiffs on 88 pitches to strike out five in his MLB debut. Sacramento certainly isn’t the easiest venue to make your first start. He’ll look for better fortune when he takes on the Cubs in Chicago next Tuesday.

Jump will make his major-league debut on Tuesday against the division-rival Mariners with veteran Luis Severino being pushed back an extra day. The 23-year-old southpaw, who was selected in the second round of the 2024 MLB Draft out of LSU, has compiled a solid 4.50 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 56/20 K/BB ratio across 38 innings in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League this season. He attacks hitters with an unorthodox delivery and a repertoire that features a mid-90s fastball, a strong curveball and multiple slider variations. Jump projects as more of a mid-rotation starter long term, but he misses enough bats to warrant immediate interest in deeper mixed leagues.

Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts told reporters on Friday that Shohei Ohtani (knee) is expected to start on Wednesday against the Phillies.

Roberts also noted that the two-way superstar received a lubricating shot for his ailing knee over the All-Star break, rather than a draining procedure. If Ohtani is able to slot back into the rotation on Wednesday, the Dodgers will be back to their regular six-man rotation.

Luis Campusano (abdomen) returned to the Padres’ starting lineup for Friday’s second half opener against the Royals in Kansas City.

Campusano was scratched from the Padres’ lineup on Sunday due to abdominal soreness, but it looks like it was only a minor issue and he’s doing much better after a few days off. He’ll start behind the dish and bat ninth for the Padres on Friday evening against Royals’ right-hander Seth Lugo.

Cole Carrigg is not in the Rockies’ starting lineup for Friday’s second half opener against the Reds.

The Rockies are battling a crowded outfield mix at the moment against right-handed pitching, so expect Carrigg to see the occasional day off as they attempt to work everyone in. Tyler Freeman will start in his place in right field and bat eighth for the Rockies against Brady Singer and the Reds on Friday evening at Coors Field.

Red Sox released C Matt Thaiss.

Thaiss had been with the Red Sox on a minor league deal. The 31-year-old backstop hit .201/.314/.313 with three homers and 24 RBI in 170 plate appearances at Triple-A Worcester. It shouldn’t take him long to latch on elsewhere, as most teams place a premium on quality catching depth.

Anthony Santander (shoulder) received another cortisone injection in his ailing shoulder over the All-Star break.

Santander continues to deal with soreness and has yet to begin hitting. At this point, it’s starting to look doubtful that he makes it back to the Jays before the end of the regular season. Santander has been shelved since mid-March due to a left shoulder labral tear.

Blue Jays’ skipper John Schneider told reporters on Friday that Max Scherzer received three cortisone injections in his injured thumb over the All-Star break.

While Schneider didn’t specifically call it a setback, he called it a “pause” in Scherzer’s rehab and noted that he’ll resume throwing soon. It’s not an ideal situation as it’s going to be several weeks at a minimum before Scherzer may be ready to return. The 41-year-old hurler has been limited to just six starts and 22 innings overall on the season.

Athletics transferred OF Brent Rooker to the 60-day injured list.

The 31-year-old slugger underwent season-ending knee surgery earlier in July to address cartilage issues. Nothing has changed in his prognosis, this was done as a procedural move to clear a spot on the team’s 40-man roster for the promotion of Tommy White on Friday. Rooker is expected to be fully recovered and ready to go for the start of the 2027 season.

Athletics selected the contract of 3B Tommy White from Triple-A Las Vegas.

As previously reported, the 23-year-old slugger will join the Athletics for Friday’s second half opener against the Nationals. He’s expected to see action at first base while Nick Kurtz is shelved before making the move over to the hot corner. White had been slashing .303/.345/.489 with nine homers and 47 RBI in 252 plate appearances at Triple-A Las Vegas.

Teng misses the minimum time on the IL with his right knee sprain. The 27-year-old hurler was booted from the Astros’ rotation after struggling to a 7.77 ERA over 22 innings during the month of June. He’s expected to function in a long relief role this time around.

Astros selected the contract of OF Lucas Spence from Triple-A Sugar Land.

It’s the first trip to the big leagues for the 23-year-old outfielder, who replaces the injured Brice Matthews (knee) on the Astros’ roster. Spence was hitting .258/.353/.424 with six homers, 44 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 278 plate appearances, mostly at Double-A Corpus Christi. He’s unlikely to see enough action to gain relevance from a fantasy perspective.
