Reds designated RHP Chris Paddack for assignment.

After being designated for assignment by the Marlins earlier in the season, Paddack joined the Reds and posted a 6.04 ERA and 1.66 WHIP across 22 1/3 innings. We’d assume he clears waivers this time, but some team (cough, the Phillies, cough) might be desperate enough to take a chance.
How to bet American League Cy Young market
Jay Croucher and Vaughn Dalzell break down the American League Cy Young market, as Cam Schlittler, Dylan Cease and Drew Rasmussen are all names to watch.

It remains to be seen whether or not the 30-year-old right-hander will accept the assignment or elect to peddle his wares on the open market once again. Paddack holds a 6.79 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and a 40/19 K/BB ratio over 57 innings in 14 appearances (nine starts) between the Marlins, Reds and Rangers this season.

Well, that was fast. Paddack’s stint with the Rangers lasted roughly 24 hours during which he allowed two runs over four innings in a long relief outing. The 30-year-old righty has made 14 appearances, including nine starts) between the Rangers, Reds and Marlins this season. At his current pace, Paddack has a real shot at breaking Edwin Jackson’s record of pitching for 14 different organizations.
  • TEX Starting Pitcher #40
Paddack gave up seven hits, walked none and struck out one. The 30-year-old right-hander served as the bulk pitcher for Texas and allowed two runs in four innings. That’s not so bad as far as Paddack appearances typically go. He has a 6.79 ERA after all. It’s safe to ignore Paddack in fantasy leagues. With off-days coming up for the Rangers, it’s fair to wonder how long the innings-eater sticks around.
  • TEX Starting Pitcher #40
Paddack can be safely ignored in all fantasy formats after compiling a bloated 6.96 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 39/19 K/BB ratio across 53 innings between the Reds and Marlins this season. The 30-year-old augments the Rangers starting pitching situation and will likely wind up eating innings in a mop-up role.
  • FA Starting Pitcher #56
Paddack heads to the open market after passing through waivers unclaimed. He was cut loose by the Reds earlier this week after posting an inflated 6.04 ERA across 22 1/3 innings of work. The 30-year-old makes some sense as an emergency stopgap option for an injury-ravaged club like the division-rival Cubs, who just lost Ben Brown (neck) and Edward Cabrera (hamstring) and are basically down to four healthy starters.
  • CIN Starting Pitcher #56
It went about as well as it could have considering the seven hits and three walks allowed with no strikeouts. Paddack at least limited the Braves to just five hard-hit balls, so there’s that, but there’s not much to build on here in fantasy baseball or in real life. Yunior Marte came on for the first time this season after Paddack left the game and immediately buried the Reds with four more runs, leaving Paddack with no shot at a win. Assuming he remains in the rotation, Paddack figures to face the Royals next week.
  • CIN Starting Pitcher #56
Paddack drew the starting assignment for the opening contest of Saturday’s twin bill and managed to save the Reds bullpen by completing five frames. He posted five strikeouts and issued three walks. He’ll continue to draw starts for Cincinnati’s injury-depleted rotation and is in line to take the ball on Friday against Atlanta.
  • CIN Starting Pitcher #56
Paddack left with a two-run lead, but that didn’t survive the sixth. He finished the outing with three strikeouts and one walk. He gave up six hits but actually just two hard-hit balls, so this was a stronger performance than any he had before being released by the Marlins. We’d still stay far away from in fantasy leagues. He’ll probably start against the Cardinals next weekend.
  • CIN Starting Pitcher #33
The Reds will pay Paddack the major league minimum while the Marlins cover the rest of his $4 million salary. Paddack has a 7.63 ERA in six starts and one relief appearance this season after coming in at 5.35 in 158 innings for the Twins and Tigers last year. He should remain awful for the Reds, but at least he’s stretched out and ready to go, which is what they need with Hunter Greene, Rhett Lowder and Brandon Williamson all shelved. According to The Athletic’s C. Trent Rosencrans, Paddack will start Saturday against the Guardians, with Andrew Abbott moving up to Friday.
  • FA Starting Pitcher #33
Paddack was designated for assignment by the Marlins on May 5th and cleared waivers on Monday, so he is now a free agent. The 30-year-old posted an inflated 7.34 ERA across 30 2/3 innings this season and should, presumably, simply be organizational starting pitching depth for the Reds.

Heriberto Hernández is starting in left field and batting sixth against the Mariners on Wednesday.

Hernández hit two home runs on Sunday and then was not in the lineup on Tuesday as the Marlins struggle to deal with their outfield surplus. Hernández has started mainly against lefties, with Griffin Conine and/or Owen Caissie heading to the bench, which makes sense because Hernández has been far better against lefties, with an .870 OPS compared to a .739 mark against righties. On Wednesday, it will be Conine on the bench despite the Marlins facing right-haner George Kirby.

Reds OF Will Benson cleared waivers and accepted his outright assignment to Triple-A Louisville.

Benson was sent to the minors on June 23rd after hitting .188/.310/.333 in 114 plate appearances this season with a 33.3 percent strikeout rate. He was then designated for assignment about a week later to make room on the 40-man roster and will now return to Louisville.

Twins signed free agent RHP Matt Bowman to a minor league contract.

Bowman started this season with the Twins and pitched to a 1.69 ERA and a 25/6 K/BB ratio in 21 1/3 innings. However, he triggered an opt-out clause in his contract and was granted his release. He then signed with the Blue Jays, where he posted a 10.38 ERA in 8 2/3 innings at Triple-A and was released again. Now he’s back with the Twins in his fifth stint with the team.

Jac Caglianone will participate in the 2026 Home Run Derby

Another exciting addition to the contest, which already features Ben Rice and Junior Caminero. In his first full MLB season, Caglianone is hitting .258/.322/.455 with a 14 home runs and 33 RBIs in 85 games. However, his 14 home runs have averaged 418 feet in length, which is tied for the best average in the majors this season. He will be the fifth Royals player to complete in the Home Run Derby, and the first since Bobby Witt Jr. was the runner-up back in 2024.

Athletics optioned 3B Max Muncy to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Since coming off the injured list on June 8th, Muncy has hit .210/.296/.387 with three home runs, 13 RBI, and a 29.6 percent strikeout rate in 20 games. He has a 9.5 percent barrel rate over that stretch, but is not making consistent enough contact, and with Tyler Soderstrom and Jacob Wilson back off the IL, the Athletics had no room for Muncy. They will likely move forward with Zack Gelof as their primary third baseman.

Athletics activated OF Tyler Soderstrom from the 10-day injured list

In 24 hours we went from hearing that Sodterstrom hadn’t done any baseball activities, to hearing he could be back soon, to actually having him back from the injured list. We have no idea how healthy he truly is, but this Athletics lineup could certainly use him. Soderstrom is one of our favorite picks for a strong second half surge.

Giants manager Tony Vitello said that Carson Whisenhunt will “likely make a start before the break.”

The Giants have not listed a starting pitcher for Thursday’s game, but have starters listed for every other game this week, so it appears that Whisenhunt could get a start at home against the Rockies on Thursday. In his lone MLB start this season, the left-hander allowed two runs on six hits in five innings against the Braves. He doesn’t have much strikeout upside, but he could be a deep league streamer in a good matchup this week.

Matt Gage has been diagnosed with a moderate flexor tendon strain.

The plan is for the left-handed reliever to have a PRP injection and be reevaluated in a few weeks. Gage has a 5.70 ERA in 27 1/3 innings for the Giants this season, but has a 3.69 ERA in 78 career MLB innings.

Justin Verlander announced that he will retire at the end of the 2026 MLB season.

In a social media post, Verlander, who was given a legacy spot in this year’s All-Star game, said that he always wanted “the game to tell [him] when it was time” to retire and “over the least several months, [he] realized that the time has come. Verlander has pitched just 3 2/3 innings this season while dealing with hip and hamstring issues. The 43-year-old currently has a 3.33 career ERA and 266 wins in 556 MLB starts. He will look to add to those numbers down the stretch for the Tigers this season before calling it a career.

Jordan Montgomery threw three scoreless innings for Triple-A Round Rock on Tuesday

Montgomery allowed five hits and struck out three while not walking a single batter. He threw 26 of his 40 pitches for strikes and had a 32 percent whiff rate and 33 percent CSW. He sat 90.7 mph on his sinker, which is down a little over one mph from where we saw him in 2024 and down almost two mph from his great season in 2023. His breaking pitches are also all down in velocity, so this could simply be a veteran who is not letting it loose as he works his way back from a long absence. We should see something closer to full strength for Montgomery in his next few starts as he gets closer to a shot in the Rangers’ rotation. There’s a chance that he’s back by August.
