Brandon Sproat tossed six scoreless innings, had 10 strikeouts and got the win in the Brewers’ 2-0 victory over the Reds on Tuesday.

Sproat gave up one hit, walked none and struck out 10. He improved to 2-4 with the win. Sproat was dominant against the Reds on Tuesday, but the Brewers decided to pull the plug after 80 pitches and six innings. The 25-year-old left his last start with a right hamstring cramp, which likely factored into the decision. Sproat has a 5.43 ERA and a 4.12 xFIP. He’s lined up to face the Reds at home next week.

Guardians optioned RHP Daniel Espino to Triple-A Columbus.

Espino managed a 5.40 ERA in five appearances for the Guardians, walking three and striking out nine. The 25-year-old will likely get more chances in the future but was asked to close out last night’s win over the White Sox with 35 pitches and the Guardians opted for a fresh arm.

Guardians recalled RHP Franco Aleman from Triple-A Columbus.

Aleman had a sparkling 0.32 ERA in 28 1/3 innings in Triple-A Columbus, along with 43 strikeouts and just eight hits allowed. The Guardians will give him another chance to stick after he allowed one run in 2 2/3 innings in a brief taste of the majors earlier this year.

Astros activated RHP Cristian Javier from the 60-day injured list.

The plan appears to be for Javier to pitch out of the bullpen for the time being, probably in a long relief role. There’s not much runway to fantasy value here, but at least Javier is finally healthy enough to pitch again.

Astros transferred LHP Bennett Sousa to the 60-day injured list.

He had just five appearances before being placed on the IL in early May with elbow inflammation. This doesn’t impact Sousa’s timeline to return at all, but it does clear a 40-man spot for the return of Cristian Javier.

Cardinals optioned RHP Gordon Graceffo to Triple-A Memphis.

Seems like an odd send down as Graceffo had a 3.35 ERA in 35 games (40 1/3 innings pitched) for the Cardinals so far this year, even if the 18:19 K/BB ratio isn’t ideal. He’ll probably be back in a few days, but the Cardinals needed the roster spot with Ryne Stanek off the paternity list.

Cardinals activated RHP Ryne Stanek from the paternity list.

Stanek returns to a 5.12 ERA in 31 2/3 innings pitched. He’s not really part of the Cardinals late-game plans at this point. Congrats to him on the new child.

Ryan Jeffers (hamate) is beginning a rehab assignment in Triple-A St. Paul on Friday.

He’s going to DH tonight for the Saints. Jeffers probably figures to be activated in the near future. Hamate surgery is known to sap some power, but it’s plausible that Jeffers finds his way into the one-catcher league radar and he makes an interesting short-term stash in two-catcher leagues.

Byron Buxton (hip) is not in Friday’s lineup for the Twins against the Yankees.

It’s his fourth missed game in a row. The holding pattern remains. We’re waiting for real news on the situation. It sounded like Buxton was close to returning after an MRI revealed a hip impingement on Tuesday, but there’s been no real movement. Consider Buxton questionable for the other games against the Yankees this weekend.

Yankees optioned INF/OF Oswaldo Cabrera to Triple-A Scanton/Wilkes-Barre.

He didn’t get a hit or walk in 11 plate appearances with the Yankees since his June 24 call-up. Cabrera returns to a .271/.330/.397 line in 68 games with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Yankees activated OF Trent Grisham from the 10-day injured list.

He’ll likely be starting today against the Twins in his return. Grisham has been on the shelf with a hamstring strain since mid-June, he was hitting .232/.341/.406 with eight homers and six stolen bases before the injury. He’ll be a reasonable deep-league starter, at the very least, going forward.
