Kumar Rocker tossed six scoreless innings with five strikeouts in a no-decision against the Blue Jays on Sunday.

Rocker was brilliant against the Blue Jays on Sunday, holding them scoreless over six innings of work. He scattered four hits and one walk, with just two runners reaching scoring position against Rocker. He tossed 60 of 92 pitches for strikes and struck out five batters. The 26-year-old right-hander will take a 3.83 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, and a 70/31 K/BB ratio across 80 innings into a start against the Tigers in Texas on Saturday.
Red Sox must 'go on a run' after sweeping Yankees

Rocker took over after opener Tyler Alexander fired a perfect first inning and authored one of the strongest outings of his career, needing just 76 pitches to navigate five frames. He generated an eye-popping 20 swinging strikes and finished with an other-worldly 46 percent CSW. It was a much-needed rebound performance after getting torched for seven runs over 3 1/3 innings by the Twins his last time out. He limited Miami to just five hits and got some help from his defense as a perfect relay throw from Ezequiel Duran cut down Xavier Edwards at the plate as the potential go-ahead run to end the sixth inning. He’ll get the ball against the Blue Jays in a tough road matchup on Saturday to finish off a two-start week. He’s been extremely volatile from a results standpoint, but his immense strikeout potential makes him an interesting streaming option until further notice.

Rocker has been taking advantage of the pitcher friendly conditions at Globe Life Field this season, but they didn’t help much tonight. He gave up a pair of homers, the first leading off the game from Trevor Larnach and the second, from Kody Clemens, following a single and a walk to open the third. His home ERA jumped from 3.02 to 4.00, putting him at 4.17 overall. He needs to miss more bats in order to get over the hump and become something more than No. 5 starter. It doesn’t help that his average fastball has dropped from 95.8 mph last year to 94.4 mph this season.

The 26-year-old righty issued a pair of walks on the day while punching out three opposing hitters. All of the damage done against him came in the fourth inning. The Royals loaded the bases with no outs, then he got Michael Massey to hit into a double play that pushed a run across, and Kameron Misner followed with an RBI single. Rocker got seven whiffs on 83 pitches on the day, posting a CSW of 25 percent. He’ll bring a 3.56 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and a 52/28 K/BB ratio (65 2/3 innings) into Tuesday’s battle against the Twins.

Rocker struck out five batters on the evening while issuing only one base on balls. He served up a solo homer to Travis Bazzana in the opening inning then allowed a run-scoring single to Steven Kwan in the fourth. That was the extent of the damage done against him. Rocker got nine whiffs on 94 pitches on the night, posting a CSW of 21 percent. He’ll carry a solid 3.54 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and a 49/26 K/BB ratio (61 innings) into Thursday’s battle against the Royals in Kansas City.

Rocker was excellent on Saturday, holding the Royals scoreless over six frames. He scattered three hits and three walks, tossing 52 of 85 pitches for strikes. Rocker succeeded mostly with batted ball luck and weak contact, striking out two and inducing nine fly outs. The outing continues his trend of success at home, ending the day with a 2.95 ERA at Globe Life Field. The 26-year-old right-hander will take a 3.54 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, and a 44/25 K/BB ratio across 56 innings into a start against the Guardians in Texas on Friday.

Coming off one of the strongest outings of his career while pitching behind an opener, Rocker returned to a traditional start here and ran into trouble early. He hit leadoff batter Jeremy Peña, who eventually came around to score on Yordan Alvarez’s sacrifice fly. He settled in briefly before Alvarez connected for a leadoff homer in the fourth, and he was tagged for two additional runs in the fifth before exiting. He finished with five strikeouts and two walks. He’ll close out a two-start week with a favorable home matchup against the Royals on Saturday.

Rocker came in as the follower in the second inning after a scoreless first from Jason Alexander. He’d go on to dominate the Rockies over 7 2/3 scoreless frames, coming one out short of finishing out the game. Rocker scattered three hits and three walks, tossing 65 of 103 pitches for strikes and generating 19 whiffs to strike out seven batters. The 26-year-old right-hander will take a 3.60 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, and a 37/20 K/BB ratio across 45 innings into a home start against the Astros next Monday.

It makes some sense. Rocker has allowed 18 runs this season, and 10 of them have come in the first inning. That’s an 11.25 ERA in the first frame. Perhaps giving him an easier start to the game will help to curtail his ratio struggles. It will also make it easier for him to pick up a win, so we do like this move for fantasy purposes.
  • TEX Starting Pitcher #80
Rocker was effectively wild in this one, walking four batters while needing 97 pitches (59 strikes) to complete five frames. He finished with only three strikeouts. The 26-year-old former top pitching prospect has worked beyond the fifth inning only twice in eight starts this season and has yet to top six strikeouts in any of those outings. He’s not a recommended fantasy option when he faces the Rockies at Coors Field on Tuesday.
  • TEX Starting Pitcher #80
Rocker had yet another uneven start here. He was consistently behind the eight ball, throwing a first pitch strike to only nine of the 18 hitters he faced and then barely getting the Cubs to swing at anything out of the strike zone. He now has a 5.01 ERA and a poor 27:13 strikeout to walk ratio through 32 1/3 innings on the season. Next up, he’s scheduled to face the Diamondbacks at home.

Esmerlyn Valdez went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, and two RBI in a win over the Reds on Sunday.

Valdez has started three of the last four games since Spencer Horwitz (hamstring) landed on the injured list and Ryan O’Hearn started playing more first base. Valdez also had a pinch-hit home run in the one game he didn’t start. In those four games, he’s gone 6-for-12 with three home runs, four RBI, and a 4/1 K/BB ratio. He’s worth an add in deeper formats while his playing time is up like this.

Eugenio Suárez got hit by a pitch during Sunday’s game against the Reds and will need X-rays.

Suárez was unable to get X-rays on Sunday because his hand was too swollen for the imaging to show anything. The team will wait for the swelling to go down and, presumably, will get X-rays done on Monday. We should have more information once that imaging is done.

Elly De La Cruz sprained his ankle during Sunday’s game against the Pirates and will be re-evaluated on Monday.

De La Cruz slipped coming out of the batter’s box on Sunday and later had to have his ankle taped. Reds manager Terry Francona said that the ankle “stiffened up” on De La Cruz after the game, and the team will need to re-evaluate him to decide whether or not a trip to the injured list is necessary. The Reds play seven days in a row this week, so the team could decide Monday’s game.

Twins SS prospect Kaelen Culpepper (left hip strain) returned to the lineup and went 0-for-4 on Sunday for Triple-A St. Paul

Culpepper was placed on the injured list about two weeks ago with a hip strain, and, at the time, had appeared close to a promotion. There are no longer any service time issues that the Twins need to worry about, and Luke Keaschall has begun playing the outfield, so Culpepper could be called up after the All-Star break if he gets back to producing at Triple-A. Before suffering the injury, he had gone 14-for-38 (.368) with two homers and three steals in 10 games in June.

Patrick Sandoval (elbow/biceps) allowed one run on three hits in four innings for Triple-A Worcester on Sunday.

Sandoval struck out three and walked one while throwing 40 of his 60 pitches for strikes. He sat 92.8 mph on his four-seam fastball, which is about a tick below where we saw him last, and he had just one whiff on nine swings on his changeup. That being said, he commanded the zone well with most of his six pitches and allowed an average exit velocity of 82.8 mph on balls in play. He hasn’t pitched in an MLB game since 2024, but it’s looking like he will be ready to join the Red Sox in some capacity around the All-Star break.

Griffin Canning will start for the Padres on Monday against the Cubs.

Canning only recorded two outs in his last start, so it was unclear when he would get the ball next. The Padres announced that Canning, JP Sears, and Walker Buehler would be the three starters for their series against the Cubs. We’d prefer to avoid all three in fantasy leagues if possible.

Logan Henderson (back) threw three scoreless innings for Triple-A Nashville on Sunday.

Henderson allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out seven batters. He threw 32 of his 50 pitches for strikes and sat 92.9 mph on his four-seam fastball, which is essentially where he was earlier in the season. He did struggle with his command on that pitch, posting just a 48 percent zone rate and 56 percent strike rate on his fastball, but he induced plenty of whiffs when it was in the zone, and his secondaries were commanded better. He’ll likely need at least one more rehab start, probably two, before he returns to the Brewers’ rotation, but now would be a good time to stash him if he was dropped in your league.

Mariners acquired INF Buddy Kennedy from the Giants for cash considerations.

The Mariners had an open spot on the 40-man, so there’s no need for a move there. He’s out of options, so he’ll presumably be added to the active roster, most likely in Weston Wilson’s place. Kennedy will be a bit rusty. Before being DFA’d today, he spent four weeks on the Giants’ active roster. He went 0-for-7 during the first 10 days of that stint and then never got into another game after June 10. The 27-year-old journeyman hit .321/.424/.543 in 48 games for Triple-A Sacramento prior to his callup.

Jarren Duran singled in Masataka Yoshida to finish off a three-run 10th as the Red Sox edged the Yankees 5-4 on Sunday Night Baseball to complete a four-game sweep at Fenway Park.

The Red Sox blew a masterful performance from Sonny Gray by giving up two runs in the ninth and then gave up two more on Wilyer Abreu’s second mistake in two innings in the 10th. However, the offense came through against Fernando Cruz in the bottom of the 10th. Anthony Siegler singled even after taking an automatic strike at the beginning of his at-bat, and pinch-hitter Masataka Yoshida followed with a double that gave him just his second RBI of the month. Tseng-Che Cheng then tied the game with a sac fly, and Duran followed with a liner to right with no one home, as the Yankees had gone to a two-man outfield. It was Duran’s second at-bat off the bench, as he didn’t start against lefty Carlos Rodón. He’s hitting just .156/.181/.244 with 33 strikeouts this month.

Sonny Gray kept the Yankees hitless into the eighth and recorded his 2,000th career strikeout on Sunday Night Baseball.

Gray was removed immediately after Amed Rosario’s single up the middle with one out in the eighth. Tyron Guerrero replaced him and got out of the inning from there. It’s the deepest Gray has ever carried a no-no, and his ninth and final strikeout of the night gave him 2,000 for his career. He’s tied with Andy Benes on the all-time list there, having passed Billy Pierce and Kevin Appier tonight. He’s seventh among active pitchers in strikeouts and fifth with 134 victories. He’ll face the Angels next weekend.
