Luis Robert Jr. (back) will begin a minor league rehab assignment on Tuesday with Triple-A Syracuse.

Robert has been on the shelf with a herniated disc in his back since late April. The 28-year-old center fielder’s impending return will complicate New York’s outfield mix, especially since rookie A.J. Ewing has been tearing the cover off the ball recently. The logical move would be to allow Juan Soto to get some extra time at DH with Ewing and fellow rookie Carson Benge in the outfield corners once he’s back. He’ll likely require at least a week or two of minor league at-bats to get back up to speed following the lengthy layoff. The durability concerns aren’t going away, but it wouldn’t be surprising if Robert were an impactful fantasy contributor during the second half based on his raw talent and track record.

Soto was drilled in the hand by a pitch during Saturday’s contest, but X-rays came back negative for any fractures and the superstar outfielder will be in the club’s lineup for Sunday’s finale in Washington. The 27-year-old slugger has hit .278/.397/.522 with 27 long balls, 68 RBI and nine stolen bases in just 110 games for the Mets this season. He’ll start in left field and bat second against Nationals’ left-hander DJ Herz.

Mets manager Andy Green told reporters Juan Soto (hand) underwent X-rays that came back negative for any fractures.

It’s a massive relief for the Mets after Soto was drilled on the right hand by a 91.7 mph sinker during the ninth inning of Saturday’s blowout win over the Nationals. The 27-year-old generational talent figures to sit out Sunday’s season finale, but that’s not a guarantee. The positive news is that he managed to avoid serious injury, based on initial imaging. He missed a significant chunk of the year with a calf injury, but still has managed to hit .278/.397/.522 with 63 runs scored, 27 homers, 68 RBI and nine steals in 110 games so far.

A.J. Ewing walloped a go-ahead three-run homer in the seventh inning, propelling the Mets to a 7-1 win over the Nationals.

Ewing took Nationals righty Jake Irvin deep for a no-doubter to right-center field in the seventh inning that traveled 396 feet, per Statcast. It was his 11th round-tripper of the season and first time leaving the yard since September 14. The 22-year-old enters New York’s final regular-season contest hitting .254/.324/.379 with 55 runs scored, 11 homers, 43 RBI and 25 steals in 119 games. Here’s an oversimplification: Ewing is going to be an impactful all-around fantasy contributor for years to come.
Carson Benge

Carson Benge went 3-for-5 with a double in Saturday’s lopsided win over the Nationals.

Benge remained sizzling-hot with a three-hit performance after joining the 20-homer, 20-steal club during Friday’s series opener. The 23-year-old is making a serious late-season push for the NL Rookie of the Year Award, hitting .429 (12-for-28) over his last seven games. He’s going to be an extremely popular mid-round selection in fantasy drafts next season.

Juan Soto was removed from Saturday’s game against the Nationals after being hit by a pitch.

Soto was drilled on the right hand by a 91.7 mph sinker in the ninth inning. He’ll presumably head for X-rays to determine whether he suffered any fractures. It’s been a nightmare season for the Mets and they can’t seem to catch a break. There’s only one game left in the season, which means it wouldn’t be surprising if this is it for Soto on the year. He was 2-for-4 at the dish prior to exiting. He’s hit .278/.397/.522 with 63 runs scored, 27 homers, 68 RBI and nine steals in 110 games this season. There should be an update on his status prior to Sunday’s regular-season finale.
Carson Benge

Carson Benge went 2-for-2 with a solo home run and two walks on Friday against the Nationals.

Don’t tell Benge there’s only two games left this year because he’s still in midseason form. Two more hits here raised his batting average to a cool .277 and his homer was his 20th. Already with 22 stolen bases, he became the first Met in team history to go 20-20 as a rookie. Getting better as he goes along, a .297/.364/.461 slash line in the second half has catapulted him into the National League Rookie of the Year race and he figures to be a buzzy mid-round pick in drafts next season

Carson Benge went 2-for-4 with two doubles, a walk, two runs scored and an RBI against the Rangers on Tuesday.

Benge hit a ground-rule double and scored on an error in the fourth inning. He later hit an RBI double to put the Mets up 6-3. Benge has three doubles, three home runs and eight RBI in 19 games in September. He’s hitting .277 with a .764 OPS and 62 RBI with five games left in the regular season.

A.J. Ewing is absent from the Mets’ starting lineup for Sunday afternoon’s tilt against the Phillies.

If you’re going to have to take a day off once in a while, doing so against Phillies star left-hander Cristopher Sanchez isn’t the worst idea in the world. The rookie outfielder has been on a tear at the plate recently, slashing .351/.397/.544 with three homers, 12 RBI and a pair of stolen bases in 63 plate appearances over his last 15 games. Nick Morabito will start in his place in center field and bat eighth for the Mets on Sunday.

Carson Benge went 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI, and two runs scored to lead the Mets to a 10-3 win over the Phillies on Saturday.

Benge led off the second inning with a solo homer off Andrew Painter to put the Mets on the board. He later drew a walk and scored a run in the sixth and reached for a third time with a single in the seventh. Benge then drove in a run with an infield hit in the eighth, setting the Mets rookie record with 156 hits. The 23-year-old outfielder is one home run away from a 20/20 rookie season; he’s at 19 homers with 81 runs scored, 61 RBI, and 22 steals while slashing .276/.339/.420 across 622 plate appearances.

Soto’s first hit of the night came on a double in the second inning that didn’t lead to any runs being scored. In the sixth inning, Soto would hit a three-run homer off of Phillies reliever Orion Kerkering to push the Mets’ lead to 6-2. It was the 26th homer of the season for Soto, who now has four homers in September and has hit safely in three of his last five games. He is slashing just .239/.329/.463 in the month.

Bailey didn’t start the game behind the dish but came on as a pinch-hitter for Austin Hedges in the fifth inning. There, he tagged Erick Fedde for a 376-foot (110.0-mph EV) solo shot that got the Guardians on the board. That was the hardest hit ball in Bailey’s career. He then delivered a go-ahead RBI single as part of a six-run uprising in the sixth inning to help the Guardians take control of the game before scoring on a fielding error by Chase Meidroth. Expect Bailey to be behind the dish in another must-win game for the Guardians in Game 5 back at home on Saturday.

Williams allowed a single to Sam Antonacci before retiring Andrew Benintendi on strikes for the first out of the inning. He then got Kyle Teel to ground into a fielder’s choice before retiring Braden Montgomery on a fly ball to left to end it. Williams needed 18 pitches to get through the ninth which could put his availability to start on Saturday into question.

Parker Messick struggled in a no-decision against the White Sox in Game 4 of the ALDS on Thursday night, giving up two runs on two hits in just 2 1/3 innings of work.

Messick struck out five batters in the abbreviated outing but also issued four free passes which led to the quick hook in the third inning. Messick walked Munetaka Murakami with the bases loaded to force in a run, then exited with the bases loaded with one out — and one of the inherited runners scored against the Guardians’ bullpen as well. The 25-year-old southpaw got 12 whiffs on 65 pitches in the contest, posting a CSW of 28 percent. It’s unclear if he’ll be available to work out of the Guardians’ bullpen in a must-win Game 5 back in Cleveland on Saturday.
