Cade Cavalli’s next start has been moved up to Sunday against the Pirates.

It sounds like the Nationals are going to take a chance that the appeal on Cavalli’s seven-game suspension for his actions against the Red Sox earlier this week won’t be heard until after the holiday weekend, which is why he’s being moved up to take the ball against the Pirates. They’re ostensibly going to have Cavalli take the ball on regular rest and skip Miles Mikolas, who is also facing a suspension. There’s always the possibility that the league decides to jump in at the last minute, but it appears that Cavalli is going to start later this weekend. He struck out a career-high 13 and allowed one run over seven innings against Boston earlier this week.

Miles Mikolas was lit up for seven runs over six innings on Monday in a win over the Astros.

Mikolas gave up nine hits, including a pair of homers. He struck out three and handed out a pair of free passes. He’s unlikely to take the ball again later this week as he’s facing a five-game suspension for his on-field actions during last week’s brawl with the Red Sox that will go into effect once the appeal process concludes. It’s possible he could start this weekend against the Yankees if his five-game ban is reduced on appeal. He’s obviously not a recommended fantasy option at this point.

Cade Cavalli’s seven-game suspension was reduced to five games on appeal.

Cavalli is eligible to start Sunday’s first-half finale against the Yankees following the five-game ban for his on-field actions against the Red Sox last week. The 27-year-old’s velocity was down and he dealt with some dehydration issues during Sunday’s start against the Pirates where he allowed four runs over 2 1/3 innings of work. The rough outing came on the heels of a brilliant 13-strikeout effort against Boston. There are likely to be fluctuations from a results standpoint with Cavalli, but he’s shown enough upside to merit consideration for a roster spot in most fantasy leagues heading into the second half.

Cade Cavalli was hit hard in a no-decision against the Pirates to kick off Star Spangled Sunday, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits in just 2 1/3 innings.

Cavalli also issued two walks while striking out three in the ballgame. After a scoreless inning, the Pirates got to him for three runs in the second, then Bryan Reynolds added a solo shot in the third. He got nine whiffs on 63 pitches in the contest, posting a CSW of 22 percent. He’ll now serve his seven-game suspension and won’t make another start until after the All-Star break.

Cade Cavalli is expected to miss his next start after being suspended seven games for his part in the bench-clearing skirmish on Tuesday against the Red Sox.

Cavalli was expected to make two starts next week, with the first coming on Monday against the Astros. That no longer appears to be the case. Of course, Cavalli could appeal the suspension and have it reduced, but we’d imagine it will cover Monday’s game since the league cited Cavalli for “initiating” the incident when he shouted at Contreras and called him “Boy” after striking him out. Even without a two-start week, Cavalli looked so good in that Red Sox start that he should be added in more leagues as a potential second-half breakout candidate.

BOS 1st Baseman #40

Willson Contreras was handed a seven-game suspension and fined an undisclosed amount after throwing his helmet at Nationals’ right-hander Cade Cavalli during a bench-clearing dustup at Fenway Park on Tuesday.

Cavalli was also suspended for seven games, while Miles Mikolas got a five-game ban and Nate Eaton was levied a three-game suspension and all were handed undisclosed fines for their roles in the fracas. All of the suspensions will start on Friday unless they are appealed. Even if Contreras does have his suspension reduced by a game or two, he’s still going to miss at least a handful of games, much to the detriment of fantasy managers.

Cade Cavalli recorded a career-high 13 strikeouts and was charged with one run — zero earned — over seven innings on Tuesday in a win over the Red Sox.

Cavalli authored one of the most dominant outings of the season, retiring the final 19 batters he faced after Willson Contreras reached on a fielding error in the opening frame. A leadoff double from Anthony Seigler was the only hit he allowed. He was at the epicenter of a bench-clearing donnybrook a couple frames later that resulted in Contreras being ejected, while Cavalli avoided a similar fate despite appearing to spark the incident. The 27-year-old former top prospect generated an eye-popping 25 swinging strikes, including 15 on his four-seamer alone, and touched 99.6 mph in an otherworldly performance. He’ll face the Astros at home on Monday.

Miles Mikolas was torched for six runs over seven innings on Monday in a loss to the Red Sox.

Mikolas coughed up a three-run blast to Willson Contreras as part of a four-run opening frame and was tagged for six runs total across the first three innings. He managed to spare Washington’s bullpen by making it through seven frames frames, but the damage was already done. He’ll face the Pirates on Sunday to finish off a two-start week. He can be safely ignored in all fantasy leagues.

Cade Cavalli posted a quality start in a no-decision against the Cardinals on Thursday evening, surrendering two runs on five hits over six strong frames.

Cavalli struck out seven batters on the night while issuing only one base on balls. All of the damage done against him came in his final inning of work on a two-run blast by Brandon Marsh. Cavalli then exited with a 5-2 advantage and in line for a victory, but the Nationals’ bullpen couldn’t hang on for him. He got 15 whiffs on 97 pitches in the ballgame, registering a CSW of 31 percent. He’ll bring a 4.00 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and an 89/29 K/BB ratio (83 1/3 innings) into Tuesday’s matchup against the Red Sox in Boston.

Cade Cavalli allowed two runs with one strikeout over 2 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the Rays on Saturday.

Cavalli loaded the bases with three straight hits in the first inning. One run would come in on a sacrifice fly before he escaped the jam with a ground ball double play. He then stranded the bases loaded in the second before giving up a run in the third. Cavalli’s day would be done early as he was pulled with two outs in the third inning at 68 pitches. He gave up six hits and three walks in all and struck out just one batter. The 27-year-old right-hander will take a 4.07 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, and an 82/28 K/BB ratio across 77 1/3 innings into a home start against the Phillies on Thursday.

Cade Cavalli has been scratched from Friday’s start against the Rays.

PJ Poulin will open for the Nationals. It’s plausible that Cavalli has his turn pushed back rather than outright skipped given it’s an illness, but we’ll probably get more guidance on that later tonight.

Bryce Eldridge went 2-for-3 with his eighth homer and two walks Thursday in leading the Giants past the Rockies 8-2.

Eldridge had three of the four hardest-hit balls of the game, coming in at 106.1 mph on his homer in the fourth, 108.5 mph on a lineout in the fifth and 108.1 mph on a single in the eighth. Hopefully, it means he’s escaping the drought that saw him hit .177 with one homer in his previous 17 games. That previous homer also came against Rockies pitching.

Carson Whisenhunt held the Rockies to two runs and three hits over 5 2/3 innings to win Thursday in his return to the majors.

Both runs came in the second. Whisenhunt gave up a single and a walk to begin the inning, but he got a double play ball afterwards. He then got ahead of Willi Castro 1-2, only to miss with a bad changeup that was deposited into the stands in left center. Whisenhunt walked three more batters over the course of the outing, but the homer was the only damage. He’s won both of his starts for the Giants this season, and he’ll probably get a longer look in the second half. First, though, he might return to Triple-A until one or two spots open up at the trade deadline.

Ryan Feltner yielded four runs and walked four in 4 1/3 innings Thursday in a loss to the Giants.

Getting pushed back a day to face the Giants, rather than the Dodgers, seemed like a good thing for Feltner, but it wound up not really mattering. He gave up solo homers in the first and fourth innings and then four hits and a walk before leaving in the fifth. Fortunately for Feltner, Victor Vodnik was able to strand the bases loaded after coming in with one out in the frame. Feltner will enter the second half 3-3 with a 4.55 ERA. That’s pretty good for a Coors pitcher, but his 47/24 K/BB in 63 1/3 innings isn’t impressive at all. He’s also given up 11 homers already.

Willi Castro homered to account for the Rockies’ only two runs Thursday against the Giants.

With Mickey Moniak back from the IL and Kyle Karros establishing himself as the everyday third baseman, Castro has been losing playing time against righties lately. Fortunately for him, the Rockies have faced lefties in four of their last six games, getting him some extra playing time. He’s batting .265/.337/.385 in the first season of a two-year, $12.8 million contract. One imagines he’ll be very much available at the trade deadline if anyone wants to take on the rest of his deal.

Merrill Kelly allowed only a Manny Machado solo homer over seven innings Thursday in the Diamondbacks’ 3-1 win over the Padres.

Kelly struck out six, matching his season high. After averaging a season-high 93.4 mph with his fastball last time out against the Brewers, he came in at 93.2 mph tonight. He averaged 92.0 and topped out at 92.7 mph in his first 14 starts this season. If his velocity stays up, he might be of use in deeper formats during the second half. Kelly figures to face the Cardinals in the D-backs’ first or second game after the break.

The Diamondbacks plan to recall Ryan Waldschmidt and designate Pavin Smith for assignment prior to Friday’s game.

Waldschmidt didn’t seem ready the first time around, but he had dragged his strikeout rate under 20 percent in the three weeks since he returned to Triple-A. He’s probably not ready to hit homers in the majors, but if the Diamondbacks want to play him regularly, he might steal enough bases to be useful in 12-team leagues. Tommy Troy, Max Kepler and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. could all lose at-bats with Waldschmidt back.

That was the expectation all along, but the Angels finally confirmed it on Thursday. Rodriguez looked strong in his latest minor league rehab start, hurling 5 1/3 innings of one-run baseball at Triple-A Salt Lake. Fantasy managers may want to see how he looks one turn through the rotation before throwing him right back to the wolves.
