Cardinals appointed RHP Hunter Dobbins as the 27th man for the doubleheader on Tuesday against the Brewers.

Dobbins will be used as the starter for Game 2. The 26-year-old has a 3.63 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, and a 19/7 K/BB ratio over 17 1/3 innings with the Cardinals this season and has also posted a 3.79 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, and 44/18 K/BB ratio in 59 1/3 innings at Triple-A this year. There is not a lot of strikeout upside here, but he has a case to remain in the Cardinals’ rotation if he pitches well on Tuesday.
Playoffs not a guarantee for 'darling' White Sox
Drew Dinsick and Vaughn Dalzell break down the Chicago White Sox slim chances of making the playoffs, where despite massive improvements from past seasons, the AL Central leaders don't have enough going for them.

Kinley, 35, will be away from the team for up to three days. The right-hander will go handle bigger things than baseball while James Karinchak takes his spot in the bullpen.

Karinchak is up to replace Tyler Kinley, as Kinley was placed on paternity leave in the corresponding move. He’ll be a middle-inning option in this stint with Atlanta.

Braves optioned RHP Owen Murphy to Triple-A Gwinnett.

Murphy made his MLB debut Monday, and he allowed two runs — one earned — over an inning of work. The 22-year-old will head back to Triple-A with Connor Thomas giving Atlanta a fresh arm. Murphy will likely be back before the end of the summer.

David Hamilton is not in the lineup for the first game of a doubleheader against the Cardinals on Tuesday.

Hamilton was pulled with left hamstring tightness during Monday’s game. If the 28-year-old was to be placed on the injured list, Greg Jones — who is on the taxi squad — would likely be the short-term replacement for Hamilton.

Spencer Miles will start Thursday’s game against the Giants.

Miles will get his third start of the season after tossing three shutout innings Wednesday against the Metts. The 25-year-old will likely go no more than five innings in the outing, and there would be just as much risk as there is reward in using him as a streamer in that contest.

Cardinals optioned RHP Ryan Fernandez to Triple-A Memphis.

Fernandez was activated off the injured list on June 30th and had thrown 3 2/3 scoreless innings before having a tough outing on Monday, where he allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits without recording an out. He has also pitched on back-to-back days, so the Cardinals likely wanted a fresh arm in the bullpen with seven more games on tap for this week. He should be back after the All-Star break.
