Twins signed free agent RHP Matt Bowman to a minor league contract.

Bowman started this season with the Twins and pitched to a 1.69 ERA and a 25/6 K/BB ratio in 21 1/3 innings. However, he triggered an opt-out clause in his contract and was granted his release. He then signed with the Blue Jays, where he posted a 10.38 ERA in 8 2/3 innings at Triple-A and was released again. Now he’s back with the Twins in his fifth stint with the team.

Bowman joins Toronto’s injury-depleted pitching staff after being cut loose by the Twins last week after triggering the opt-out in his minor league deal. The 34-year-old journeyman has posted a strong 1.69 ERA and 25/6 K/BB ratio across 21 1/3 innings at the Triple-A level this season after making 20 appearances for the Orioles last year. He’s made 231 career appearances between seven different organizations since 2016.

Bowman had an opt-out clause that he triggered after the Twins declined to add him to the 40-man roster. The 34-year-old had been pitching really well in Triple-A this posting, posting a 1.69 ERA and a 25/6 K/BB ratio in 21 1/3 innings. Another team is likely going to sign him quickly.

Bowman winds up returning to Minnesota as middle relief depth after being cut loose to pursue other opportunities at the conclusion of spring training. The 34-year-old’s journeyman odyssey has resulted in 231 career appearances between a staggering seven different organizations at the major-league level since 2016.

Altavilla and Bowman were in Twins camp as non-roster invitees this spring attempting to win spots in the club’s bullpen. Altavilla made 28 appearances for the White Sox last year. Bowman got into 20 contests for the Orioles last season and should be able to latch on somewhere, likely on a minor league pact.

The 34-year-old hurler has yet to allow a run over 5 1/3 innings during Grapefruit League play with the Twins — and didn’t allow a run during his time with Team Israel in the World Baseball Classic either. He had been scheduled to pitch for the Twins on Sunday. Let’s see if this is a leverage ploy to get added to the Twins’ roster or if he has another opportunity lined up.

The cosmic ideal of a modern-era journeyman reliever, Bowman has quietly bounced between five organizations — Orioles, Mariners, Diamondbacks, Twins and Yankees — over 48 appearances since 2023, compiling a perfectly serviceable 5.10 FIP and 45/21 K/BB ratio across 59 1/3 innings during that span. He’ll compete for one of the final spots in Minnesota’s bullpen during spring training.
  • HOU Relief Pitcher #51
Bowman heads to Houston as emergency organizational relief depth after being released by the Orioles earlier this week. The 34-year-old righty has struggled to a lackluster 6.20 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 18/6 K/BB ratio over 24 2/3 innings (20 appearances) this season in the big leagues.

Bowman, 34, had been designated for assignment earlier in the week. He struggled to a 6.20 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and an 18/6 K/BB ratio over 24 2/3 innings in 20 appearances with the O’s. If he catches on elsewhere, it’ll almost assuredly be on a minor league pact.

Bowman’s latest stay with the Orioles saw him make one appearance and give up two runs in 1 1/3 innings. He has a 6.20 ERA in 24 2/3 innings on the season. If he clears waivers, he’ll probably stick around and hope for another shot in September.

Bowman provides the Orioles with some additional relief depth with rookie starter Brandon Young hitting the injured list with a hamstring strain. The well-traveled 34-year-old registered an underwhelming 5.79 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and a 17/6 K/BB ratio over 23 1/3 innings (19 appearances) earlier this season at the highest level.

Ivan Herrera was added to the National League All-Star team as an injury replacement for Dodgers’ superstar Shohei Ohtani.

It’s the first trip to the Mid-Summer Classic for the 26-year-old backstop. Herrera has had a solid first half at the plate, slashing .249/.384/.395 with 11 long balls, 40 RBI and a 68/51 K/BB ratio over 411 plate appearances.

Dodgers’ skipper Dave Roberts told reporters on Friday that Shohei Ohtani will have his left knee drained on Sunday.

He still didn’t give any sort of timeline on how long Ohtani will be held off of the mound for, but he did note that if this were September that Ohtani would still be pitching. Take that for what it’s worth. It sounds like he’ll avoid a trip to the injured list altogether, though it seems likely that he’ll miss at least a couple of trips through the Dodgers’ rotation.

Blue Jays activated RHP Braydon Fisher from the bereavement list.

The 25-year-old right-hander was away from the team for the first half of the week. He returns to a terrific 3.33 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and a 46/21 K/BB ratio over 46 innings in 43 appearances out of the Jays’ bullpen. He has also tallied three victories and a save on the year.

Mickey Moniak is in the Rockies’ starting lineup for Friday night’s battle against the Giants.

That’s noteworthy, as it’s the second time in four games this week that Moniak has suited up against a southpaw, though he has hit near the bottom of the lineup in both of those games. Still, fantasy managers have to be thrilled to see him starting to see the field against left-handers to go along with the outstanding production that he has provided against right-handers this season.

Max Muncy is absent from the Dodgers’ starting lineup for Friday evening skirmish against the Diamondbacks.

Muncy will take a seat with left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez toeing the slab for the Diamondbacks. Tommy Edman will cover third base in his absence while Miguel Rojas starts at second base and will bat eighth for the Dodgers.

Jake Cronenworth is not in the Padres’ starting lineup for Friday evening’s matchup against the Blue Jays.

It looks to be nothing more than a routine night off for the versatile 32-year-old. Cronenworth had started every other game during the week at either first base or second base. Ty France will start at first base and will bat sixth for the Padres against Blue Jays’ right-hander Shane Bieber.

Jacob deGrom has been scratched from his scheduled start on Sunday due to a mild left glute strain.

The Rangers are considering the possibility of placing deGrom on the injured list, but with the timing of the All-Star break they aren’t sure if it’s necessary or not yet. Either way, it sounds like the 38-year-old right-hander should only wind up missing a start or two. No word yet on who will take his place on the slab for Sunday’s first half finale.

Justin Crawford was a late scratch from the Phillies’ starting lineup on Friday night due to soreness in his left knee.

The issue isn’t believed to be major and the 22-year-old outfielder is considered day-to-day. Derek Hill will start in his place in center field on Friday evening against Jack Flaherty and the Tigers at Comerica Park.

Giants optioned LHP Carson Whisenhunt to Triple-A Sacramento.

Whisenhunt pitched the Giants past the Rockies on Thursday, allowing just two runs on three hits over 5 2/3 innings. If there’s still an opening in the Giants’ rotation after the All-Star break, expect Whisenhunt to get another opportunity to stick around. In the meantime, they’ll utilize that roster spot on an extra bullpen arm for the remainder of their weekend series against the Rockies.

Giants activated RHP Keaton Winn from the 15-day injured list.

Winn missed nearly a month’s worth of action due to a right elbow strain. Before landing on the injured list on June 11, the 28-year-old righty had posted a 3.23 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and a 26/9 K/BB ratio over 30 2/3 innings in his 29 appearances. His return should provide a nice boost to the back end of the Giants’ bullpen.
