Clay Holmes (fibula) will face hitters on Saturday in a live batting practice session.

Holmes was originally slated to make a minor league rehab start for High-A Brooklyn, but that has been scrapped due to the high possibility of rain in the forecast. The 33-year-old impending free agent has drawn some interest as a potential trade candidate, unless the Mets opt to extend him, while working his way back from a fractured fibula that put him on the shelf back in mid-May.
Mets' ace Scott is finding his groove again
James Schiano discusses Mets' pitcher Christian Scott's strong stretch over his last six starts and why the Mets right-hander could emerge as a top-50 starting pitcher for the rest of the season.

Holmes is seen as a “significant trade candidate” and multiple teams are expected to scout his rehab outing, per Sammon. Holmes notched a 2.39 ERA over his first nine starts of the year before fracturing his fibula on May 15. There have also been talks about the Mets potentially extending Holmes ahead of the deadline, so this will be a fluid situation to track.

Holmes has been out since fracturing his fibula back in mid-May when he was struck by a comebacker. The 33-year-old was originally expected to miss three months, so it looks like he’s on track with that estimate, which puts him back in New York’s rotation by early August.

Holmes fractured his fibula on May 15th when he was hit by a comebacker. The original timeline was that he would miss three months, and that appears to be holding. If Holmes begins throwing in July, he could conceivably return to the Mets in the early part of August.

Severino has posted a 1.04 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, and 18/8 K/BB ratio in 17 1/3 innings at Triple-A this season for the Mets. Rather than lose him to another team, the Mets decided to add him to the 40-man roster and then send him back to Triple-A. To free up space on the 40-man roster, the Mets transferred Clay Holmes to the 60-day IL.

The good news is, it appears Holmes will not need to undergo season-ending surgery. The bad news is that Mets manager Carlos Mendoza believes that Holmes is going to miss around three months with the fracture. The right-hander was one of the few bright spots with a 2.39 ERA over his 52 2/3 innings, but it now seems unlikely he’ll be back in the Mets rotation until the middle of August — at the earliest.

Holmes suffered a broken leg when he was nailed by a 111-mph line drive from Yankees rookie Spencer Jones during the fourth inning of Friday’s start at Citi Field. Amazingly, he faced seven additional batters prior to exiting the contest when X-rays revealed the fracture in his leg. The unfortunate development is the latest crushing blow to New York’s rotation, and a significant hit for fantasy rotations, since he posted a sparkling 2.39 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 45/18 K/BB ratio across 52 2/3 innings over nine starts to open the year. He’s facing a lengthy absence and figures to miss at least a couple months. There should be a definitive timetable from the Mets at some point soon. Jack Wenninger, Jonah Tong and Tobias Myers are the logical candidates to take his rotation spot. Wenninger, who has posted a 1.08 ERA and 38/18 K/BB ratio over 33 1/3 innings at Triple-A Syracuse this season, and Tong would be the most intriguing fantasy-wise given their strikeout upside.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters after the game that Holmes will be out “for a long time.” It’s another massive blow to New York’s rotation as Holmes had been exceptional so far this season with a 2.39 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 45/18 K/BB ratio across 52 2/3 innings across nine starts. He’ll hit the injured list this weekend and could wind up missing the rest of the year given the severity of the injury.

Holmes held his former team scoreless through the first two innings but ran into some trouble in the third inning. After retiring the first two batters he faced in the frame, Holmes would allow back-to-back singles to Ben Rice and Aaron Judge, who were then driven home by back-to-back doubles from Cody Bellinger and Jazz Chisholm. Holmes would retire Ryan McMahon on strikes to end the inning, but was charged with one more earned run in the fifth inning after being pulled for Austin Warren. Holmes took a 111.1 MPH liner off the leg from Spencer Jones with no outs in the fourth inning, but stayed in the game despite the scary situation. He struck out a season-high eight batters despite having his shortest and arguably his worst outing of the season. He draws another tough start in his next outing, which is scheduled for Wednesday on the road against the Nationals.

Holmes was once again solid while throwing a season-high 103 pitches, but a two-out rally from Arizona in the third inning (which consisted of three singles and a walk) was enough to do him in. He struck out six and walked a pair in the loss. Holmes is now 4-3 on the year despite a stingy 1.86 ERA. He hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in any of his eight starts. He’ll look for more run support in the series opener against the Yankees on Friday.

While the Mets’ other four starters are a combined 2-13, Holmes has opened the campaign 4-2 with a 1.69 ERA, and he still hasn’t allowed more than two runs in any of his seven starts. He’s due to face the Diamondbacks next time out.

Athletics acquired RHP Aiden Moffett from the Cubs in exchange for RHP Aaron Civale.

Moffett was an undrafted hurler who pitched at both LSU and Texas before signing with Chicago. He’s really struggled — struggled is an understatement — with 9.67 ERA and 25/42 K/BB ratio at the Low-A and short-season levels. He’s basically just a lottery ticket the A’s will try and get more strikes out of.

Athletics traded RHP Aaron Civale to the Cubs in exchange for RHP Aiden Moffitt.

Civale leaves the A’s after forging a 5.47 ERA and 58/23 K/BB over 74 2/3 innings over his 16 appearances — 15 of those starts — in his lone season in Sacramento. The right-hander will get a chance to start for Chicago, but fantasy managers would be wise to take a wait-and-see approach before investing in him as anything more than a streamer against the worst lineups.

Jesse Rogers of ESPN reports that the Cubs are acquiring Aaron Civale in a trade with the Athletics.

Rogers reports that the Cubs will trade right-hander Aiden Moffitt in return. The Athletics designated Civale for assignment Wednesday, and it’s not surprising that they found a trade partner, and specifically a trade partner that needs rotation help like the Cubs. The right-hander has been awful after a terrific first nine starts for the A’s, but he’ll get a chance to rebound while playing behind a better club in Chicago. It’s also worth noting that Civale had some brief success with the Cubs last year with a 2.08 ERA in five appearances over 13 innings.

Christian Walker left Saturday’s game against the Orioles with an apparent injury.

Walker comes out shortly after Jeremy Peña with an apparent right leg injury against the O’s. Walker appeared to hurt himself on a swing attempt, and wasn’t able to continue after grabbing at his right side. There should be updates on both players shortly.

Nico Hoerner singled four times and knocked in a run Saturday in the Cubs’ 6-2 takedown of the Twins.

Surprisingly, it’s his first four-hit game since Apr. 16, 2024. Hoerner, one of the league’s coldest hitters the last couple of months, has six hits in the first two games of the second half. He was 5-for-36 previously this month.

Matthew Boyd limited the Twins to one run and three hits over six innings in a victory Saturday.

The damage came on Kody Clemens’ solo shot in the second. Boyd allowed only two other hits and struck out four. He’s 4-0 with a 2.57 ERA in five starts since returning from a knee injury last month. He’ll pitch on the road in Pittsburgh next time out.

Despite giving up three hits, Jacob Webb pitched a scoreless ninth to finish off the Cubs’ 6-2 win over the Twins on Saturday.

He got a lot of help. With two on and none out, Brooks Lee drove a ball to right center that Pete Crow-Armstrong came up just shy of making a sliding catch on. The ball then deflected off his glove, bouncing about 15 away from him. In spite of that, Josh Bell was in no position to score from second and wound up getting thrown out heading back to third after a throw home. Lee was trying to go second, but with Victor Caratini correctly reading the situation in front of him and staying put there, Lee gave up on the play entirely for a few seconds and was thrown out returning to first, resulting in a double play. It was all pretty embarrassing for the Twins, but it worked out for Webb, who lowered his ERA to 2.98. He’s the current favorite for saves in Chicago with Daniel Palencia out.

Taj Bradley yielded five runs in five innings Saturday in a loss to the Cubs.

Bradley surrendered a solo homer in the first, two runs on a single, a walk and a double in the second and two more runs on two walks, a single and a double in the third. If not for the free baserunners, it would have been a fine outing. As is, he took his first loss since June 9. Bradley fanned six. He’s 12th in the majors with 124 strikeouts but also tied for 14th with 43 walks. He’ll take a 3.85 ERA into his next start in Cleveland.

Kody Clemens delivered two solo shots to provide both Twins runs in Saturday’s loss to the Cubs.

Both homers came off lefties, which was pretty impressive. Usually a platoon guy, he had just four career homers in 225 plate appearances against southpaws before taking Matthew Boyd and Caleb Thielbar deep today. Clemens has 12 homers and 30 RBI in his last 35 games. He totaled six homers and 18 RBI in 50 games previously.

Nathan Eovaldi (illness) is likely to pitch Sunday’s game against Atlanta.

Eovaldi is “feeling significantly better” after dealing with illness Friday. The 36-year-old should be good to go for that series finale, but fantasy managers should be prepared just in case, if possible.
