Yankees outright Max Schuemann to Triple-A

Cody Bellinger will be activated Sunday, so Schuemann returns to Triple-A after just two days on the roster.

Schuemann, now 29, hit .194/.333/.361 for the Yankees in 87 plate appearances earlier in the year. He’s hitting .256/.385/.402 for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 145 plate appearances.

Schuemann was in a 1-for-18 slump to begin the second half, so he’s the choice to go to make room for Luis García Jr. This will probably lead to some additional outfield time for José Caballero.

Sure, why not. Schuemann has posted a respectable .378 on-base percentage through 36 games this season, which earns him the opportunity to face White Sox starter Noah Schultz with Trent Grisham on the bench and Paul Goldschmidt hitting third. It’s unclear whether this is a one-game outlier or the start of a larger trend for Yankees manager Aaron Boone. We’ll see.

Schuemann (.906) has a far better OPS against lefties than Jasson Domínguez (.693), José Caballero (.657), Anthony Volpe (.657) and Amed Rosario (.656), but he wasn’t picked over any of them tonight. He has just three at-bats so far in the second half.

Paul Goldschmidt is in the midst of an extended slump, so Bellinger will play first base with Ben Rice at DH, and Max Schuemann getting another start in left field. The Yankees are doing everything they can to try and jumpstart a floundering offense.

With the Rays throwing left-hander Shane McClanahan, the Yankees will play Max Schuemann in center field and have Grisham on the bench. In five games since coming off the injured list, Grisham has gone 4-for-18 with two doubles, a home run, five runs scored, two RBI, and a steal. He also has a 58 percent hard-hit rate in that incredibly small sample size, so he should heat up again with more at-bats under his belt.

For the third straight game, Aaron Judge (ribs) is not in the Yankees lineup. However, as of now, he is also not on the injured list. The team has sent him for additional meetings with a specialist since the bone bruise on his ribcage is in such a unique spot. The Yankees will face Boston on Friday, so no off days are coming, which means the team will likely need to decide on whether or not to put Judge on the injured list before the weekend series starts. For Thursday, Jose Caballero will play shortstop with Anthony Volpe on the bench, and Max Schuemann will play right field and bat ninth.

It’s the second time this week that Chisholm has found himself out of the Yankees’ lineup, both times against opposing left-handers. Max Schuemann will start in his place at second base and will bat eighth for the Bombers against Jacob Lopez and the A’s in West Sacramento.

Grisham will open the contest on the bench with veteran lefty Patrick Corbin toeing the rubber for Toronto in this one. Cody Bellinger is in center field with Max Schuemann in left field.
